What is Spina bifida?

Spina bifeeda is a birth defect that is present in kids since their childhood and basically its starts to develop within the third and fourth week of the pregnancy. This is a disease or defect which can be diagnosed in a kid before birth in ultrasound of mother.

There are the three different types of spina bifida. I will like to share each of the type one by one and explain my maximum knowledge to you so stay with me till end.

Types of spina bifida

There are three types of spina bifida.

  • Mylomeningiocele.
  • Meningeocele.
  • Spina bifida occulta.

Mylomeningiocele

This is a first type of this birth defect.This type of birth defect is most severe from all types of spina bifida. In this type basically a sac is present at the end of the spinal canal and there is no proper opening of the spinal canal in the fetus.

In mylomeningiocele basically in a sac there are spinal canal part and nerves compresses and hence get damaged. This is the most severe in all types and cause impairties in walking and also cause a lot of pain in lower limbs specially.

Meningeocele

Meningeocele is the second most common type of spina bifida and it is less severe than the first one type that I have already explained because in this type although there is a sac present but;

There is no compression of the spinal canal and nerves in that sac because no portion of spinal canal is present in that sac.

Spina bifida occulta

This is also known as fast spina bifida because there is no opening present at the end of the spinal canal then the question arises that why we say it spina bifida so the answer is simple there is a gap or space between the vertebras of the spine at the end of the spinal canalthats why we say it as Spina bifida occulta.

This is all about this birth defect hope so this article adds in your information
