Instilling Discipline In A Child, How Is It Done In Your Locality

A child disobeys the family rules and is punished by his parents.

A young girl misuses her cellphone and is denied access to it

A boy breaks a curfew and is grounded by his father

All the above illustrates the forms of disciplining that is given in some situations to the people involved. Parents often discipline their children when they misbehave and it is a normal thing.

What is discipline?

Discipline can mean to guide or teach someone. It also includes giving corrections to a child for his misbehavior. Discipline also involves imparting moral training that helps a child to make the right choices.

Discipline often comes from someone that is higher than the wrongdoer, for example children get disciplined by their parents, servants get disciplined by their masters, and so on.

Living in Nigeria, there are many ways in which we get punished for our wrongdoings. Sometimes the child is given some restrictions, denied some privileges so as to help him learn.

Most times they receive punishments which often involves spanking. Some families discipline their children by teaching them from God's word the bible. Showing them the right way to live and what the bible says. These ones are also taught the consequences that may result if they disobey a particular rule.

What usually give rise to descipline in your locality?

Disobedience often give rise to discipline. Sometimes if the child does not adhere to a certain rule and attempts to break it, he often receives punishment for it.

Most children listen to their parents and apply the discipline they are given while some reject it. It all depends on individuals and also how the discipline was given.

What do you think is the best form of descipline to be given to a child?

I think the best form of discipline is the discipline that is based on God's word the bible. Instilling the love of God in children will help them develop the fear of displeasing him. That way when the know God's laws they will be moved to apply it even without being forced to.

When they read from God that they should obey their parents and be a use of the love their parents instilled in them they will be moved naturally to please him.

Why is descipline important in a child's life?

Discipline is very important because:

• Without discipline a child will continue to be unruly and this cam really exhaust the parents

• Without discipline a child will be confused of which steps to take and he is likely to take the wrong steps

• Without discipline a child will lack good morals in the society

What should be the right motive when discipline is given?

Parents should keep in mind that the motive of discipline is to help the children develop into mature, responsible and balanced adults.

The kids should not be given the impression that their parents just wants them to feel pain for what they did, rather they should be helped to understand that the discipline is for their own good.
