Should gift-giving be seasonal

What is gift giving?

A gift also known as a present is any item of ours which we let go without expecting any form of payment or favour in return, for it to qualify as a gift, it must be free and must not already belong to the recipient.
Most gift are expressions of appreciation and the gift in itself may be of great value while in some instances, the value is in the act of giving.

We don't give because we have enough, so giving is not for the financially wealthy, it is something done by those who are emotionally wealthy and generous.
When our gift is intangible, in the form of an act of kindness, it is often called a favour.

Should it just be for a season in a year?

Gift giving should not be seasonal, it should be spontaneous and it is often more effective when it has the elements of surprise.
A good gift giver will not wait for a specific season to give a gift. Instead, a good gift-giver is observant and will seize the opportunity to give a gift that addresses a need.

Name other opportunities that one can exchange gifts.

Random giving
Gifts can be given at random at any time of the year without any special occasion. Without any special event looming around, a wife can just get a neck tie for her husband.

To address a need
When we observe a friend, relative or spouse is in need, we can use it as an opportunity to present a gift that will address the need. Maybe the person has been observed borrowing a phone charger and we decide to give it as a gift.

Welcoming a newborn
When visiting a couple who has just been delivered of a baby, it would be a good opportunity to give a gift. Something for the baby.

Marriage Anniversary
You could track a friend's marriage anniversary and present an anniversary gift to the couple.

What are proper items that can be exchanged as gifts
  • A bottle of cheap or expensive wine would be a nice gift for a marriage anniversary.
  • A pair of shoes would be a nice gift for a young nephew at any time, just make sure you get the size right.
  • For a rich boss or uncle who seem to need nothing at all, you can give him a greeting card that says something thoughtful. He will appreciate it more.
  • I have a friend who will appreciate an umbrella for a gift.

Presentation matters
You may come up with an expensive gift while a less expensive gift may be more memorable because of the presentation.
Instead of giving a cellphone to my wife, I took the time to wrap it in a gift wrapper and attach a note saying from a secret admirers. The little suspense, when guessing what is wrapped is part of the fun. It adds more weigh to the value of the gift when wrapped, and when thoughtful words accompany the gift, it's effect are long lasting.
When you get a call from your spouse because the well wrapped gift you sent to her office address has just been delivered and she is willing to open it with her workmates hanging over her shoulder and guessing what could be inside. This create lasting memories.

What should be the right motive for gift giving.
  • A good reason for giving a gift would be to strengthen a relationship between the giver and the receiver.
  • Another good reason for giving a gift is to express appreciation.
  • it would also be a good reason if the gift is given to alleviate a person's situation.
  • There are situations where gifts are given as peace-offering to mend a strain relationship.
Who is qualified to give gifts?

As mentioned earlier, anyone emotionally wealthy enough can be generous with a gift. A person with material wealth but lacks generosity can not give a gift but a financially poor person who is generous can give a valuable gift.

How should the giver and the receiver feel about the act of giving.

Both parties involved should feel happy, though it is believed that the giver gets the greatest share of happiness. The receiver should be greatfull for whatever he is given .

Conclusion

Though both are happy, there happens to be more happiness in giving when compared to receiving so don't wait to give when you have excess and are financially wealthy. Giving is not a function of a person's wealth.

MOD's Observations/suggestionsThank you for taking part in the contest and I wish you success

I will love to get a gift all round the year, and i love being surprised with a well wraped gift, it tells me the person was very serious in their intention to give the gift, that is why time and effort was spent in the wrapping of the gift.
Best of luck for you.
