What do you understand by compassion?

Compassion is an attitude, a great quality that stems from the heart. A heart that's motivated by compassion performs kind acts or deeds that will bring the needed relief to the target at the right time. Such compassionate attitude can be in words or actions.

Who can show it and why?

Everyone living is under obligation to show compassion to the other person. It doesn't matter where one comes from or live, individual background or status, compassion should be a desirable quality to be exhibited by all.

Have you shown someone compassion, how did you do that and how did the recipient feel?

Few years ago, I was in my workshop one certain day when a young lady limped adjacent to my shop and squat down beside an old truck packed there. At first I thought she was tired and want some rest before continuing her way but after some minutes, she rather laid down flat under that spoilt truck.

Looking out closely through the window, I noticed she was sick or maybe worn-out from stress. She looked a bit insane. Passersby would look at her and may wonder what her problem could be. Hours passed by, she stayed put under the spoilt truck.

I took the courage, walked straight to her and asked her what was wrong with her. She kept mute. Are you sick? I inquired again but she just mopped at me and look the other way.

Before the close of work, I went back to see if I can help out in any way. Are you hungry? Would you eat? She nodded her head. I quickly called a food vendor who gave her some food and water. Later, I asked her where she is from and where she is going to. No answer. We closed work and left with the hope that she'll leave.

But I was wrong because the next day, she was still there. Unfortunately it rained heavily that night. So I in company of others came to find out her problems, I first gave her food then we queried her more. So she spoke up.

Her problem? She ran out from her mistress who maltreated her and tried to sell her for rituals. On her way, she was hit by a car whose driver drove off. What can we do for her? She was losing memory but managed to mention her village. She spent many days under that spoilt truck while I was buying food for her everyday. Another woman brought clothes for her to change.

Some days later, I called one of my uncle who in turn compassionately took it upon himself, invited a doctor and carried her to the hospital. She was given medical attention for two weeks and got her memory back. Then she told her stories, her parents were located and they came for her.

Has anyone shown you compassion before and how did you feel when it was shown to you?

Yes several times I've been shown compassion. On occasion I became unemployed seeking for an allocation within the government premises to establish my computer outfit, for months things became so difficult that I would go hungry without food. One woman at the office of Aba South local government chairman where I applied for the allocation felt so compassionate for me that she took an advance salary and gave me part of it.

That act of compassion brought great relief to me. At least I had food for some days.

Express your compassion to someone in a practical way.

Do you think compassion is a virtue that should be cultivated by all and be demonstrated in a practical way?

Exactly so!! Like I mentioned earlier, everyone is obligated to show compassion in words and actions.

How did you learn to show compassion and where?

The cover picture of this post is an artistic impression of the greatest man who ever lived. He was an embodiment of compassion when on earth. He compassionately healed a leper who may have been very lonely for the whole years he suffered from leprosy. Imagine Jesus Christ touching his hands, the man feeling a human touch which he has been deprived for years.

From Jesus' many acts of compassion, I learned to be compassionate. I love bringing relief to people around me in any small ways I can.

How will the world look like if everyone cultivates this quality?

Imagine coughing and someone rushed with a tissue paper to relieve you. Imagine being hungry and someone noticed it and rushed to get you a delicious meal. Imagine crying and someone lend you a shoulder to lean on. This world will be a haven of peace if you and I will be compassionate to all of us.
