NGOENYI CONTEST | YOUR CHILDHOOD DREAMS

in hive-139765 •  3 years ago

Hello Steemians. Hope you’re well. I thank @kyara2 for inviting me to partake in this contest.

Aspirations are really good because they enable you to know what to work towards.

As a child, in early primary school my focus was normally on getting really good grades. However mid primary school I discovered Gifted Hands by Ben Carson and read the book and my mantra from then on was I wanted to be a neurosurgeon.

If anyone asked me what I wanted to be, being a neurosurgeon was it for me. On reaching High School, I got 100% in my Senior 1 in Biology and that just catapaulted my belief in being Neurosurgeon.

Things started going downhill when I reached Senior 3. Sciences became a puzzle for me and it seemed no matter how much energy I put in the results just never seemed to go above 50%.

I reached a point where I kind of just gave up. However in the arts I was doing better. It is at this point that I gave up on this dream cause I did not see how this was going to happen when I did not like and perform well in sciences.

This trend continued till I managed to drop sciences completely and did Arts in my A’level. At this point I really just wanted to do music and hopefully figure out my way in that field.

However while joining Uni my Guardian told me to do Law and I did not object. The course required hard work and I am grateful I managed to pass. People normally say that when you find something you love, you feel like you belong and things just kinda fall in place.

However I felt like I was kinda struggling in this field and upto today I still ponder if this is the right career path that I really want to follow.

I have reached a point where I am trying out my small ambitions which I heard as a child but which people did not consider something anyone could do successfully.

I had this ambition of being a great singer but felt there were so many people who were better and I doubted my family would agree if I asked to pursue a course in music so I just did what I was told to do.

What I realize however, is that it all comes back to you if you allow yourself to follow other people’s dreams for instead of following your own dreams. You find that you are not happy or fully convinced that you are doing the right thing.

So have I realized what I wanted to be when I was a child? Haha no. Dreams changed a long the way and may even change more in future but provided I am becoming the best version of myself then I am good to go.

I would advise young children to decide what their dreams are and follow through and not to allow other people to decide for them what their dreams are.

Thank you for reading. I invite @iraguha, @bksteem and @hillaryonbless to participate in this contest.
