INTRODUCTION

In this article, I would like to take us through the preservation or maintenance of the environment, precisely our planet Earth which could also be called our home.

Granted, humans have made some commendable progress in various fields in the past which has mainly been shallow thereby tackling the signs instead of the basics or causes.

To illustrate: if a house is decaying as a result of damp woods, painting the woodworks will not avert it from falling apart. In a similar vein, there must be a newly organized and different way humans use this Earth which is our environment. Just controlling the damage will not be enough.

Let's take for instance the issue of environmental pollution. Clearly, averting or preventing it is much better than successfully dealing with it's bad effects, and this coincides with the popular saying that prevention is better than cure.

However, attaining this goal would need a fundamental change in human society and in the focus of big business.

Before delving into acts of Preservation or conservation of the environment, just check out the images below depicting different forms of environmental pollutions that can sabotage the optimal management or conservation of
the environment, in fact the following acts or practices should be avoided if our environment is to be properly conserved.

To this end, the book Caring for the Earth says, "caring for the Earth requires values, economies and societies different from most that prevail today."

And so what are some of these values that require that they be changed in other to preserve our environment?

At this point, we're going to consider deep-rooted causes of this environmental crisis in terms of it's pollution and also the remedy.

Selfishness
Putting the interests of our planet home ahead of human exploiters is the initial necessary step toward safeguarding the environment.

But then, few people are willing to forgo or abandon a wealthy lifestyle , even though it may be destroying the planet for future generations.

For example, when the government of the Netherlands, which is among the most polluted countries of Western Europe, tried to restrict or reduce car travel as part of a campaign for antipollution, this triggered widespread opposition that deliberately crippled the plan.

So self-centredness impacts nagatively on decision makers, such as the government of the day, as well as the masses, hence it's not favourable to environmental conservation.

Greed

When it comes to choosing between profits and preservation, money normally speaks volumes. In connection with this, powerful industries use their influence to reduce pollution control or to bypass government regulation completely.

Consequently, this particular environmental crisis in question gives rise to damage to the ozone layer. As a matter of fact, many scientists today are aware that the ruination of the ozone layer is among the worst man- made environmental disasters in history.

Ignorance

What we know seems small or unimportant compared with what we don't know. Raven, director of the Missouri Botanical garden says, "we still know relatively little about the abundance of life in tropical rain forests, amazingly, we know more- much more- about the surface of the moon."

This is equally true concerning the atmosphere, for example, nobody knows how much carbondioxide can be kept on pumping into the sky without impacting on global climate, therefore ignorance is another cause of environmental pollution.

Shortsighted Viewpoints

Unlike other disasters, environmental crisis affect us as it spreads gradually, most times without being noticed and at the same time causing serious harm or damage.

The book, saving the planet, likens our present situation to that of the hopeless passengers on the seriously damaged Titanic in 1912, and it says, "few are aware of the proportions of the potential tragedy."

So the writers are of the opinion that our planet home can only be preseved if politicians and businessmen face the reality and also think in the direction of long-term feasibility instead of short-term benefits.

Preservation of the environment should be a joint or collective effort and not to be left to a particular individual or group of persons to handle, nor to be left in the hands of government alone. I implore all of us to join hands in implementing this task for a conducive living and also for our own advantage healthwise and otherwise.
