What is Discipline

Simply put, discipline is the act of training someone by means of instructions or punishment. It is a method of gaining authority or teaching someone to respect authority.

When we think of discipline, we think of children, yes children need discipline more often than never but it is also a fact that we all need discipline even as adults, but the reason for this contest has to do with disciplining children, the pros and cons as shown in our localities.

Forms of discipline in my locality

I come from the southern part of Nigeria, in this part of the country, discipline is a very important part of a child's life and is never taken for granted. It is dished out in required proportion.

Discipline in this part, is usually given in form of punishment with the phrase "spare the rod and spoil the child". The tools used in administering this punishments are, canes, kobokos, slippers, sometimes brooms! or any thing handy at that moment.

This form of punishment is usually prevalent amongst the low class citizens also know as kpako neighborhoods. While amongst the elite class of the citizenry also known as the ajebotah neighborhoods, you will see that they try to adopt the forms of discipline used by the foreign countries.

Like the use of instructions, grounding, seizing the child's beloved possession. With this difference in discipline, you will notice that there is great difference in the behavior of the children of this two classes.

What usually give rise to discipline in my locality

Most times discipline is usually given as a result of a child failing to obey instructions, not withstanding that there are many other reasons that give rise to a child being disciplined. I will try to mention the few I can remember.

A rebellious child can also attract discipline, and sometimes discipline is given to teach an important lesson best know to the parent. In a nutshell, going beyond the pound of authority will always result in a child being disciplined.

How do kids respond to discipline in my locality

Discipline is a dreaded word in the ears of kids in my locality, looking at the forms by which it is administered.It is avoided at all cost even by lying but it is inevitable seeing that foolishness is in the heart of a child, discipline is always required.

There is only one expected outcome of discipline, which is obedience/compliance, when this is not the case, more discipline is administered... Smiles.

what is the best form of discipline

What do I think to be the best form of discipline? From observing my locality and from experience, seeing that I was once a child and still is_ someone's child, I think that the best form of discipline is that given out of love.

What do I mean? What ever the form a parent decides to use, it should be in proportion with the offense committed with reason, the child should understand this reasons. Knowing that children tend to be naive and curious not understanding the full extent of their actions.

A parent should make sure her discipline is able to teach this lessons. At the end of the day, discipline becomes a tool to teach with and not a form of punishment.

why is discipline important in a child's life

Childhood is a very important stage of learning, as a child learns to obey authority so also he learns to disobey it, so as to see the limits to his adherence. So discipline serves as a tool of control and to teach this limits(morals).

what is the best motive for disciplining

This i would say, is the best and most important part of disciplining and should be given more attention before carrying out discipline.

Discipline as I've said, should be given out of love and should be a tool to teach with. So with this said, discipline should never be given out of anger because the child might sense the feeling of hatred and that will defeat the real essence of discipline.

So if a parent is angry, he or she should take sometime to cool off be for administering discipline. In this way many dangers will be avoided and the lessons will be well learnt.
