Retro Review - King Colossus

It is no surprise to say that the saga The Legend Of Zelda, has been, is and will be the inspiration for many video games, that is something undeniable and totally indisputable. The repercussion that has had the saga of the hero Link is something impressive so that in the huge catalog of video games that exists there is a giant amount of video games that have been inspired by this saga, some of them being even blatant copies, but other games maintain their own personality and essence, but with the characteristic elements of the saga The Legend Of Zelda. One of the games that I will talk about today maintains the same characteristic of being an inspiration of the aforementioned game, an Action RPG quite entertaining, but with RPG elements even more present than those seen in the Link saga.

Today's Retro Review is about: King Colossus.

As it is normal in this type of games, always at the beginning you start being a totally normal character, without any specialty at the beginning, however as the story progresses you will become one of the strongest beings of your kingdom (or even of the universe of that video game) and the hero. At the beginning of this story our character is sent on a quest to find a sword, however, our "hero" is captured and enslaved to fight in a coliseum. Some time has already passed since his capture and the protagonist has become a great fighter. During this time, the villain of this game, "The Evil Queen", appears; she has taken over kingdoms and has placed several of her lieutenants in different areas of the world to increase her power. The main objective of this queen (not at all cliché), is to revive a god, the god of destruction. However, to stop all these plans is our protagonist, which thanks to the Queen's daughter is released in order to put an end to the evil that is spread throughout the world.

Graphically it is a game that complies with showing a "medieval" and magical atmosphere quite successful, in terms of graphic quality is more than decent, but in terms of stage decoration is very simple, without many details to highlight and elements that make it stand out, also in terms of coloring is even more simplistic, very little variety in the color palette, in addition, the colors used to create the scenarios are off, there are many dark colors, like browns, grays and blacks in several areas and also that the elements of each scenario are repeated a lot throughout this adventure. Although there are areas where these elements are much better represented, with good details and decoration, it is mostly as I mentioned before.

On the other hand, the character design is much better, our main character has a relatively large sprite with good details, plus they move with good fluidity. Similarly, many enemies, but especially the final bosses have good designs, they are much larger and imaginative, although we will always find the classic enemies of the games of this genre, however they are not bad at all.

Rarely, but very rarely in this type of games we will find a bad soundtrack and King Colossus is not one of those games. Since its soundtrack fulfills its purpose very well and we will be able to listen to melodies that are quite well composed and that are tailor-made for this game, that is to say, its soundtrack accompanies very well in all situations that we will live in this adventure and also manage to create an atmosphere according to the place in which we find ourselves. So do its sound effects, something very necessary for the feed back of any video game, despite its "simplicity", although to a lesser extent if we compare it with the soundtrack, they manage to fulfill their goal with flying colors.

In the purest style of The Legend of Zelda King Colossus is an Action RPG where we will go through a series of scenarios and locations of different types and with different enemies to defeat, in the same way we will go to the classic places like villages and castles where there will also be the classic NPCS that will help us in our mission, they will sell us the necessary items to continue our adventure and those characters that provide us with information necessary to understand this story.

The combat, as is logical, is in real time and for this our protagonist will have equipped a sword with which he will eliminate as many enemies as possible. King Colossus maintains most of the classic features of the Action RPG genre games, in which we must also go to the classic dungeons, full of traps, riddles and of course, items that will be of great help.

The difficulty of King Colossus rises moderately, the action intensifies as we advance in the story, this is a game where we will always be in constant fight against enemies, so there will be few moments of relaxation, there is always something to do, so by that aspect is quite entertaining.

As I mentioned before, this game has RPG elements and aspects even more present, since we can improve our weapons, as we can use other types of weapons, and even magic weapons. By having a variety of different weapons to use, it is logical to intuit that some of these weapons will be more effective against certain enemies, so we must learn which weapons are more effective for the enemy that we will have in front of us at that moment.

King Colossus really is a very entertaining game, which does not hide at any time what its inspiration is, but, that game manages to take that obvious inspiration and shapes it into a game that has its own charisma and personality, being a highly recommended title.
