Retro Review - Wolfchild

I remember several months ago, while watching a video of a youtuber who lives in Japan and bought old video games in the best possible quality and cheap, I saw this game which I will talk about today, it is a fairly old game, but it caught my attention for its futuristic aesthetics and its protagonist, which make quite a contrast, however, I completely forgot the name of that game, I only knew that the main character was transformed into a werewolf (or something like that). Days went by after watching that video and I completely forgot about it, until a few weeks ago when I finally found it by chance while searching for games and I finally got to play it.

Today's Retro Review is about: Wolfchild.

In Wolfchild we are faced with a classic kidnapping story in which we must rescue someone. In this story a terrorist group called "Chimera" kidnaps the father of the main character, Doctor Kal Morrow, who is a doctor in biotechnology. So his son and protagonist of this game must go to save him and for this he uses one of the biotechnological experiments of his father which gives him the ability to become a "werewolf" (although it is not exactly like the classic "werewolf"), giving him a lot of physical gifts which make him able to achieve his mission.

This game has several ports and specifically I played the Mega CD version, which contains more elements such as animated cinematics and sound effects with better quality, also with the music, since being a CD version (although this emulated), it listens better. But I'll talk about the sound later. As for the graphics, Wolfchild is a game that is very decent graphically. Wolfchild is a game that stands out in several visual aspects, it is not a spectacular game nor was it a graphic revolution in its generation, but it is really quite good, since it has a good level of scenarios with decorations, elements and colors that make them different from each other, each scenario has something characteristic, both in its atmosphere and scenery, as well as in the enemies that we can find in them.

The set of animations of our protagonist is varied and although it is not as fluid as other characters in other action/platform games, it could be said that it achieves its purpose. The design of enemies is varied and according to the aesthetics and plot of the game.

The music in this game is great, it is of very good quality and is varied in terms of rhythms and musical genres, which manages to fit with all the action situations and all situations in general terms that we will live in this adventure. Also, the sound effects are adequate and fair for what is required.

Wolfchild is a fairly conventional action/platform game, but it is still highly fun and entertaining, however I think it is a game that could be considered as "difficult", in many moments the difficulty curve rises too high, making certain situations very difficult to overcome.

Our character, as is characteristic in this type of game, has the ability to jump and hit enemies, this being the base mechanics of the entire game. At the beginning our character will only have his human form, but after overcoming certain obstacles and getting a specific item, we will obtain the form of a "werewolf". Thus exchanging the form of our character depending on the amount of life he has. In addition to hitting in his human form, in his werewolf form he will be able to shoot game projectiles (or something like that). Overall it's a very conventional action/platformer game, which has that element of shapeshifting our character and changing attacks depending on what form he's in.

Wolfchild, as I mentioned, is a pretty difficult game, but it's a pretty entertaining challenge to overcome.
