Sega's Classic Golden Axe Venturing into Animated Comedy World

You read that headline right, Sega is making Golden Axe into an animated series. They are teaming up with Comedy Central, to air it, and people behind Star Trek Lower Decks, American Dad, and Solar Opposites. I mean, this could be good, it could also be a disaster in the making. Either way, there are plans for 10 episodes to begin with so the project is happening. Next, we will probably find out that the writers of Glee are doing a musical live action Shinobi. Please, Sega, no, don’t take that as we want it.

Opposites Attract, Right?

Over the years of playing Golden Axe (affiliate link), I am more a fan of Golden Axe II, I have found myself chuckling as I dispatched enemies. At no point did I think, man, it would be awesome to hear this dwarf with the axe (but the other guy is called Axe Battler, make it make sense) pop a few smart-ass comments like Gex did. It never crossed my mind.

It apparently did with people at Comedy Central and Sega.

I have no idea what style the show will take, that has not been discussed yet. The only thing we know outside of animated comedy is the three main characters will star and Death Adder is the main bad guy. There is an original character assisting the trio as well as pulling a character from Golden Axe III (no idea why) into this show.

Where I Think They Are Going to Go

I honestly hope this is angled towards adults with mature themes and situations. I am not talking “God of War mature situations” but gore, violence, etc.

There is no way this can be G or PG and work. If they go that route, I don’t see it working. Golden Axe is a violent game that was only held back due to the limitations of the hardware (how can you whip an enemy with an edge weapon and not cut something off?).

I think they might go Axe Cop route (affiliate link) with animation style and violence. I hope they do. I am not calling for disgusting levels of gore but there must be some if they are going to have their weapons (this is not the 80’s, everyone doesn’t have to magically block every attack).

The setting will probably be in the game world as it was told on the Sega Genesis which is fine with me. The world is familiar with fans so why mess with it?

What do you think? Can Golden Axe work as an animated comedy? Let me know in the comments below.
