Nigeria is a country that is blessed with several wildlife, including wildlife that is currently protected in Nigeria due to threats such as loss, poaching, habitat, and trafficking of wildlife,e, which is illegal. I have several times written about protected animals in Nigeria, and in this post, I have introduced other protected animals that we haven't talked about before. In our previous post, we discussed these animals: cross River gorilla 🦍, Nigeria Cameroon chimpanzee, and several others. For today, let's discuss these two protected animals below.

Forest Elephant

The status of this animal is critically endangered, and its habitat is the Forester region in the southern part of Nigeria. In terms of population, less than 500 individuals remain in southern Nigeria. In terms of threats, the animal is faced with poaching for habitat loss and ivory. As for conservation efforts, there is a protection initiative in places like the Omo forest reserve in Nigeria.

Pangolin

The status of this animal is that all the species are threatened, and its habitat is various habitats across Nigeria. In terms of threats, the animal is faced with illegal trafficking for scales and meat. Conversation efforts it is rescue and rehabilitation initiatives by organizations like the Pangolin Conversation Working Group in Nigeria.

Causes of Habitat

• Deforestation: This is caused by agricultural expansion, logging, and infrastructure development, leading to the loss of this habitat.

• Human Wildlife Conflict: People usually enter the forest to hunt for this animal, which is harmful to them.

• Poaching and Illegal Wildlife Trade Most people target these animals and hunt them for bushmeat, exotic pets,, or medicine.

Legal Status

• Wild Animal Law (1063): This is a law that was established to protect certain animals in Nigeria.

• International Agreements: Nigeria belongs to a signatory convention on international trade in endangered species of wild flora and fauna.

• Protection Bill and Endangered Species Conversation: There is legislation in Nigeria that aims to strengthen the protection of endangered species and improve their lives in Nigeria.
