Today I'm going to tell you about a woman who, as an actress, activist and rights defender, has dedicated her time, talent and resources to being a force for change, working not only with survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence and child abuse, but also other causes that she is passionate about: Mariska Hargitay.

Mariska Hargitay (1964 - )

Mariska Magdolna Hargitay was born in Santa Monica, California, in 1964. She is the daughter of actress and sex symbol of the 1950s Jayne Mansfield and actor and former Hungarian Mr. Universe Mickey Hargitay. When Mariska was barely 3 years old, she and her two brothers suffered a car accident on a stretch of road between New Orleans and Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, in which her mother died. The vehicle collided with a truck and the three adults in the front seats were killed, while the three children in the back survived.

She attended a Catholic high school, where she was active in student government, sports, cheerleading and the theater program. She speaks English, Russian, Spanish, French, Italian and Hungarian. After graduating from high school, she enrolled in the UCLA School of Theater Film and Television. That same year, she was crowned Miss Beverly Hills USA. By her first year of college, she had an agent and had starred in several small roles.

She made her film debut with a small role in the horror film Ghoulies in 1985. She later also acted in Leaving Las Vegas and Lake Placid. On television, she has starred in such series as Cracker, Prince Street, ER, Ellen and Baywatch, but her most significant role is that of Detective Olivia Benson in the series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, which has aired since 1999. For that role, she has been nominated eight times for the Emmy Award for Best Actress in a Drama Series (she won in 2006), and twice for the Golden Globe Award for Best Lead Actress in a Drama Series (she won in 2005). She has also received two Gracie Allen Awards and a Prism Award.

The series follows the detectives of the Special Victims Unit as they investigate and prosecute crimes of a sexual nature. Some of the episodes are loosely based on real crimes that have received media attention. Her role in the series brought her personal involvement: since 2004, the actress has chaired the Joyful Heart Foundation, dedicated to helping victims of abuse. Founded by Hargitay, Joyful Heart was created to provide support to survivors of sexual abuse, domestic violence, child abuse, elder abuse and human trafficking. The foundation has sent more than 5,000 women and children to therapeutic programs in New York, Los Angeles and Hawaii. Hargitay is a certified rape counselor, and in 2012 she campaigned for the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act. As a rape survivor, Hargitay has called for an end to the stigma surrounding sexual assault.

In 2017, Hargitay produced a documentary film titled I am Evidence, which focuses on an investigation into thousands upon thousands of rape kits stored in various police departments that have not been analyzed.

Hargitay says that the impact of her character Olivia Benson is such that viewers approach her to share their personal experiences, especially those who are survivors of sexual abuse. Evidently in our culture we needed a character like Benson, who fights and defends tirelessly survivors, who seeks to help in their healing, compassionate and committed. That fictional character crossed the screens and became real in Mariska.

Hoy les voy a contar sobre una mujer que como actriz, activista y defensora de derechos, ha dedicado su tiempo, talento y recursos a ser una fuerza de cambio, trabajando no sólo con los sobrevivientes de agresión sexual, violencia doméstica y abuso infantil, sino también otras causas que le apasionan: Mariska Hargitay.

Por ese rol ha sido nominada ocho veces al premio Emmy a Mejor Actriz en una serie dramática (ganó en el año 2006), y dos veces al Golden Globe como Mejor Actriz Principal en una serie dramática (ganó en el año 2005). También recibió dos Gracie Allen Awards y un Prism Award.

La serie sigue a los detectives de la Unidad de Víctimas Especiales mientras investigan y procesan delitos de naturaleza sexual. Algunos de los episodios están basados ​​libremente en delitos reales que han recibido atención de los medios. Evidentemente en nuestra cultura necesitabamos un personaje como Benson, que lucha y defiende incansablemente a los sobrevivientes, que busca ayudar en su sanación, compasiva y comprometida. Ese personaje ficticio traspasó las pantallas y se hizo real en Mariska.
