Embracing My Henna Art: From Passion to Professionalism

Discovering the Love for Mehndi

I have always been fascinated by Mehndi (henna) art. However, the professional mehndi artists charged a lot, and whenever I got my mehndi done at a salon, it never turned out the way I wanted. Disappointment was a constant companion. One day, I decided to try it myself. Surprisingly, it turned out quite good—not perfect, but better than the salon's work. I was thrilled!

A Gift and a Turning Point

Seeing my excitement, my father brought me some tools to practice mehndi. Without any formal training, I started practicing on my own. Over time, my skills improved significantly. I began applying mehndi for friends and family, but I didn't charge them as I was still learning.

Growing Confidence and Free Work

As my designs improved, people started loving my work. I applied to Mehndi for free, hesitant to charge for my art. I did a lot of designs without asking for money, even during family functions. Everyone appreciated my mehndi, and I felt happy.

Realization and a Bold Move

Eventually, we moved to a new neighborhood. People there admired the mehndi on my hands and asked where I got it done. When I told them I did it myself, they wanted me to apply it for them—for free. One day, it hit me that I was wasting my talent. People took advantage of my hesitation to charge, and some even complained about my speed, which is essential for detailed mehndi work.

Standing Up for My Art

I decided to start charging for my work. When I told people, they initially paid, but then they stopped talking to me as if I had done something wrong by asking for payment for my hard work. This was disheartening, but I stood firm. I knew my talent deserved recognition and fair compensation.

Balancing Mehndi with University Life

As a computer science student with a busy schedule, including internships, I couldn't apply mehndi professionally. However, whenever someone asked, I clarified that I charged for my work. Many disappeared, unwilling to pay, which was fine by me.

The Final Exams Incident

During my 5th semester final exams, a neighbor who always complained about my speed asked me to apply mehndi. I told her I was busy with exams, but she insisted I make time. Her lack of respect for my priorities was shocking. I ignored her messages for a few days and then firmly replied that my career and future were not a joke. I wouldn't compromise my studies for free mehndi.

Conclusion

People can be rude and take others' hard work for granted. I learned to value my talent and not let it be wasted on those who don't appreciate it. My mehndi journey has been a mix of joy and challenges, but I've grown stronger and more confident in my art.
