The two largest planets in our Solar System, Saturn and Jupiter, will come so close to each other (only 0.1° apart) during the Winter Solstice night of December 21 that they will appear as one huge star - the Great Conjunction. The star of Bethlehem at Christ's birth is said to have been this conjunction in fact.

As each planet moves at a different speed, such a constellation is extremely rare. It happens only every 20 years, and 2020 brings the closest conjunction of these two since 1623 - which was not really visible though, as it was too close to the Sun. The last similarly close and visible conjunction took place in the 13th century.

I used to think that all this kind of stuff is superstitious BS - but if you really think about it... Each celestial body has a gravitational force depending on its mass.

When several planets line up in special constellations, they can influence the Earth's trajectory around the Sun, thus changing the Earth's orbit by up to 6%.

The Moon's orbit around Earth causes the oceans to rise and sink, it can even cause catastrophic flooding. If our instruments were fine enough, we could see the moon pull our coffee in the mug.

Animals that rely on falling and rising tides, such aus oysters, have been shown to react to the moon very precisely, even when transported inland away from shore.

Considering that the human body consists of ca. 60% water, it is not that surprising to assume that certain celestial constellations may have an effect on our lifes as well.

So how to view the Great Conjunction?

Jupiter and Saturn will be visible in the low South-West night sky on December 21. Check at what time the sun sets at your place - the best view will be around half an hour after your local sunset. You will have around an hour before the planets sink behind the horizon.
