Potgieter: in Dutch this refers to someone who creates pots, probably stone pots. Does this have the same meaning in SA?

I'm sure the road was named after Potgieter, I really do not know the meaning of the name ☺

Well, pot = ‘pot’ in english and ‘gieter’ can have various meanings, but in this case it’ll probably by ‘caster’. Basically someone who casts pots. Maybe iron pots or something like that.

Interesting meaning, thanks for breaking it down ☺

Hahaha your welcome 🙃 To me Afrikan language is very interesting. Lots of Dutch words we either don’t use anymore and more kinda Dutch words, but evolved ones from old Dutch. At least that is my impression since I’m not at all a specialist in Old Dutch and Afrikan language 🙃

Weren't the Boers Dutch?

Boers? The soccer players? Yes indeed. Boer = Farmer by the way; Maybe the same in Afrikan language?

This should clarify it for you. And, no not a soccer team. 😎

Had to react to your last comment here, no further comments in the original chain possible ... anyways: I know, Europeans robbing the entire world empty and all of that shit; Doesnt make me proud being a Dutchman. Well, I feel more a world citizen anyway. You probable know the Dutch were the last to stop slave trading? Pfffff Dutch and Trading are synonym, they traded everything. I think we look a bit better to the world today, but we came from far.

Yeah all us colonial stock are off the hook now that the US Empire is running amuck around the world. 🤪

Ah correct; The Dutch landed as the first nation from Europe. They claimed it as their own land. Invented apartheid. Then they gave it to the Brits. Wonderful people the Dutch pfffff

Wonderful people the Dutch pfffff

They (Europe) were all pretty much imperialistic mother fuckers back then. Some of them are still not totally out of the woods on that.
