The idea of Metaphor has been salient as of late. The word Metaphor itself is in ...

... fact a metaphor - meaning to bridge, a transference, to connect things that aren’t normally connected. On a recent Speaking of Jung episode, Mark Winborn described it as "using one conceptual or imaginal domain to articulate the experience of another conceptual or imaginal domain", and therefore a transference of meaning occurs between the two. And by domains he refers to unconscious to conscious, cognitive to somatic, past to present and present to future.
We have somatic bodily impressions that press on us for expression, and we bring them into the world through metaphorical form. Take a moment to REFLECT on how cognition is filled with metaphoric enhancement. Do you SEE my point? Can you GRASP it? Or do you WRESTLE with these ideas? Metaphors are ubiquitous, and we use metaphor without knowing that we're using them! So our capacity for metaphor directly influences our capacity for sensemaking in the world.
I also happened across ‘The Expressive Body in Life, Art and Therapy’ written by Daria Halprin and, so far, it seems to tie together a few different threads I’ve been unpicking recently: namely the psyche (specifically the work of C.G. Jung) and the human potential for movement. In fact, the first chapter is quite aptly titled ‘Movement As Metaphor’, which is what prompted me to write this fairly wordy brain dump.
And it’s in this experiential landscape where it all seems to be coming together for me right now. Our bodies carry our whole life’s story, both the conscious and unconscious parts. How we inhabit it, and the way we move is its primary way of expression. Using movement as a kaleidoscopic exploration into the interplay of body, psyche and cognition, what insights might we find by coming into a dialectic with sensation, response, posture and gesture?
