Implementing multiple Intelligence (MI) in lesson Planning and Delivery
The knowledge of the intelligences of learners you have as an educator before planning and delivering your lesson very key in effective teaching.
A lot of pupils are left out in class because the teacher handling them does not understand what intelligence they fall in. It is therefore necessary for a teacher to understand the types of “intelligences” in his/her class to for class control and productive lesson delivery.
Before breaking the ice on the ‘multiple intelligence’, we need to have wider view of what a lesson plan is. A lesson plan is the instructor’s or teacher’s road map of what students need to learn and how it be done effectively during the class time.
It guides and gives a direction to the overall goal of teaching.
So, to achieve this overall goal, recognition of the multiple intelligence in the lesson plan is very important.
What is multiple intelligence?
Multiple Intelligence is a theory put postulated by Howard Gardner in 1983.
The idea is that intelligence is relative as people have eight different of learning excellently.
Individuals should be encouraged to use their most preferred intelligence in learning.
Instructional activities should appeal to different forms of intelligence.
Assessment of learning should measure the forms of intelligence.
Eight established Intelligences
Linguistic intelligence
This category of learners is good at words, reading and listening. They do not want disturbance in class. They are good actors. They love speak in class.Logical/mathematical intelligence
The learners under this intelligence are very good in calculation, logical reasoning. They are number smart. They love puzzles, they think abstract things. They are equally good at experiment. Here, the teacher should employ probing method of teaching and use graphic organizersVisual Spatial Intelligence
They learn fast with pictures and wall arts. They are said to be picture smart. In your lesson plans, include pictures, videos, chart, etc to capture this intelligence.Bodily-Kinsesthetic intelligence
They love to hand tools. They are body smart. They hyper active. They can’t stay at a place. They need activity-oriented class, practicals, sports,
Etc.Musical intelligence
These ones are music smart! They learn better with music. They love to listen to drum and instrument. Such children should recognize in planning so they don’t miss out.Interpersonal intelligence
They are people smart. They are good in interacting with others. They enjoy group work in class. They will always want to discuss with others in class. They like to teach other children in class. In your lesson plan as a teacher, include group work, discussion and seminar.Intrapersonal Intelligence
They are self-smart.
They just want to be alone and figure things out themselves. They are more individualistic. Add independent practice for the sake of such children.Naturalistic Intelligence
They are nature smart. They love nature. They always want to see environments. They love visiting farms, zoos, going for excursion. So, for this kind of students, the must add an outdoor activities in the lesson plan to carry them along.
Summary
Multiple Intelligence (MI) helps the teacher to get every child involved in class during lesson delivery. MI is one of the components of blended lesson plan. Since the ultimate goal of teaching is to impact the learners or students, it can now be categorically stated that recognition of MI in lesson plan and delivery is indispensable.
