It is good to be back with some pictures of the robber fly that I took just before the dark. Robber fly is known as a predator of almost flying insects. It is capable of knocking down the prey by injecting a fluid into its victims. Having this reputation, robber fly is also called assassin fly. It belongs to the family Asilidae in the order Diptera. I only spotted a single robber fly on the dried twig, and it seems to be brave in handling the prey all alone. Robber flies are commonly called hanging thieves because they hang by their front legs as they eat their prey. They are heavy feeders and eat often. They can consume insects larger than themselves after the insides have become mush. They have a single pair of wings that they hold over their back when resting. They have three simple eyes (ocelli), located in a depression on top of their head, between two very large compound eyes that provides them with great vision.
