Origin:

The Whirling Dervish is first started in Turkey in 13th century, it was performed by followers of the Mevlevi order of Sufis. The Mevlevi were founded by the poet and mystic Jalaluddin Rumi, who believed that the dance was a way to reach a state of spirituality and union with Allah.

Gesture:

In this dance, the dervish continuously move in a circle, with one arm pointing towards the sky and the other towards the ground.
The spinning represent:
(•) The journey of the soul towards Allah.
(•) The rotation of the planets.
(•) The movement of the universe.
(•) Hand's position shows the take and give theory.

Music:

The music on which the dance performed is traditional Turkish instruments which includes the ney (a reed flute) and the kudum (a double-headed drum). Through this type of music and dance darvish reached at higher level of spirituality.

Performance:

Now, This is performed all over the world
By the person who is sufi, in sufi communities.
By the person who are not Sufi but try the meditative qualities of the dance.

Thank you for giving your precious time.
Goodbye.
