Hi everyone! This is the 2nd part of my series of writings about uncommon sea creatures. In this second part, I would like to introduce you all to 'Sea Pen" an uncommon nocturnal creature which is almost looks like old quill pens or feather pens that resemble a plant. But they are not sea plants rather they are animals.
The sea pens are also called soft coral. They are not always similar looking, they can be varied in terms of their shapes. Such as umbrella-shaped, heart-shaped, flat-looking, whip-shaped, etc.
Among all these different shapes the whip-shaped sea pens are the longest which can be more than 6 feet long. There are more than three hundred species of sea pens that can be found around the globe. Their density in the polar regions is higher than in any other area.
The sea pens are colonial invertebrate marine animals, their order and phylum are Pennatulacea and Cnidaria.
This creature can be poisonous as they have tiny harpoons embedded with strong digestive enzymes which can melt down the flesh of animals within a short time.
The lifespan of sean pens can be up to 100 years old. This fascinating sea creature can glow in the dark.
Thanks for reading my post. Hope that you have learned something new. If you have ever seen this sea creature then comment below and let me know about it.😀
Best regards
