Visit to Arquà Petrarca, the medieval village where the poet Francesco Petrarca lived - Discovering Italy with alequandro!

This time we are in the province of Padua in northern Italy and without having been scheduled, since we were nearby we went to visit this beautiful village.

It was late, it was only an hour before sunset, but I still managed to get an idea of ​​this beautiful town.

Do you think that a well-known Italian TV program "Kilimanjaro" has awarded it as the second most beautiful village among the 20 most beautiful in Italy!

Era tardi, mancava solo un'ora al tramonto, ma sono comunque riuscito a farmi un'idea di questa bellissima cittadina.

Pensate che un noto programma tv italiano "Kilimangiaro" l'ha insignito come il secondo borgo tra i 20 più belli d'Italia!

Arquà Petrarca is famous because here the famous poet Francesco Petrarca lived the last years of his life.

Arquà Petrarca è famosa perchè qui ha vissuto gli ultimi anni della sua vita il celebre poeta Francesco Petrarca.

At a brisk pace because the darkness would not take long to arrive, we visited the Oratorio ss Trinità and the Loggia dei Vicari.
As soon as you enter the village, the atmosphere feels ancient, thanks to the bricks and exposed stone that characterize the town.

A passo svelto perchè il buio non ci avrebbe messo molto ad arrivare, abbiamo visitato l' Oratorio ss Trinità e la Loggia dei Vicari.
Appena di entra nel borgo l'atmosfera sa di antico, grazie ai mattoni e la pietra a vista che caratterizzano l'abitato.

The oratory was crowded because of a meeting, so we did not lose heart and we headed towards the house of Francesco Petrarca...

L'oratorio era accopato a causa di una riunione, quindi non ci siamo persi d'animo e ci siamo diretti verso la casa di Francesco Petrarca...

This medieval town has fewer than 2000 inhabitants, in fact I confirm that I have seen very few people.

Being able to walk in the middle of the road, without worrying about cars and an experience that I always appreciate, I manage to immerse myself completely in the place where I am.

Poter camminare in mezzo alla strada, senza preoccuparsi delle auto e un'esperienza che apprezzo sempre, riesco ad immergermi completamente nel luogo dove mi trovo.

There was very little left at sunset...look at that distant mountain...it almost looks like a pyramid...that feels the weight of gravity! :D

A tourist sign makes me more aware of where I was.
I would never have been able to visit the whole village!

Non ce l'avrei mai fatta a visitare tutto il borgo!

Unfortunately the house museum of Francesco Petrarca had just closed then we decided to move by car and park in the lower part of the village.

Putroppo la casa museo di Francesco Petrarca aveva appena chiuso allora abbiamo deciso di spostarci in auto e parcheggiare nella parte bassa del borgo.

Here is the church of Santa Maria Assunta.

We have had information about the church since 1026. At the time of Petrarch, it had an already falling porch and today completely disappeared. Petrarca's funeral was held in this church and was buried nearby, as per testament.

Della chiesa si hanno informazioni sin dal 1026. Ai tempi del Petrarca, essa presentava un porticato già cadente ed oggi completamente scomparso. In questa chiesa si tenne il funerale del Petrarca e nelle sue vicinanze fu sepolto, come da testamento.

Next to the church there is the ark, in red Verona marble, which still contains the remains of the poet follows the example of the ancient Roman sarcophagi.
It was erected six years after the poet's death by his son-in-law Francescuolo da Brossano and bears the inscription dictated by the poet himself:

“Frigida francisci lapis hic tegit bone petrarce; susipe virgo parens animam; sate virgin peace. fessaq (ue) iam terris celi requiescat in arce "

or

" This stone covers the cold bones of Francesco Petrarca, welcome, O Virgin Mother, his soul, and you, son of the Virgin, forgive. May it, tired of the earth, rest in the heavenly fortress”.

A fianco alla chiesa c'è l’arca, in marmo rosso di Verona, che tuttora contiene le spoglie del Poeta ricalca l’esempio degli antichi sarcofagi romani.
Fu eretta sei anni dopo la morte del Poeta dal genero Francescuolo da Brossano e reca la scritta dettata dallo stesso Poeta:

“Frigida francisci lapis hic tegit ossa petrarce; suscipe virgo parens animam; sate virgine pace. fessaq(ue) iam terris celi requiescat in arce”

ossia

“Questa pietra ricopre le fredde ossa di Francesco Petrarca, accogli, o Vergine Madre, l’anima sua, e tu, figlio della Vergine, perdona. Possa essa, stanca della terra, riposare nella rocca celeste”.

The street below is bordered by a fountain and a stream.

It is called the Petrarch's fountain but it is a structure that actually existed before the arrival of the Poet and to which he came to draw water, so much so that perhaps he also had some restoration work carried out on it.

The couplet in Latin is engraved on the front arch in Nanto stone:

“Fonti numen inest, hospes: venerare liquorem, unde bibens cecinit digna Petrarcha deis"

(A god lives in this source, or stranger: venerates this water, drinking which Petrarch was able to sing divine verses).

La strada sottostante è costeggiata da una fontana e un corso d'acqua.

E' chiamata fontana del Petrarca ma è una struttura che in realtà preesisteva all’arrivo del Poeta e alla quale veniva per attingere l’acqua, tanto che forse vi fece eseguire anche dei lavori di restauro.

Sull’arco frontale in pietra di Nanto è inciso il distico in latino:

“Fonti numen inest , hospes: venerare liquorem, unde bibens cecinit digna Petrarcha deis"

(Un nume abita in questa fonte, o straniero: venera quest’acqua, bevendo la quale il Petrarca poté cantare versi divini).

We decided to continue on the road and go around the church.

Abbiamo deciso di proseguire lungo la strada e girare attorno alla chiesa.

At the back of the church there was a park with a path that would take us back to the car.

Along the way, a work somewhat in contrast with the ancient character of the village, a sculpture by Rabarama.

Sul retro della chiesa c'era un parco con un sentiero che ci avrebbe riportati alla macchina.

Lungo la strada, un opera un po' in contrasto con il carattere antico del borgo, una scultura di Rabarama.

This short visit to Arquà Petrarca has come to an end and I anticipate that I will return to better visit this village, all to be discovered.
