A very warm regards to the Steem4Nigeria community. This week's topic is about money, a generally accepted means of exchange which comes in form of hard cash such as bank notes or coins, and liquid asset such bank deposits.
The topic inquires into the popular saying that “Money is the root of all evil.”
How true this claim is can be determined from different angles. My post will attempt to identify what truly is the root of all evil.
Do you think money is really the root of all evil, or do you think it is more about how people use money that can lead to bad things happening?
Money is actually not the root of all evil. The “love of money” is instead. The love of money has led many to commit a lot of atrocities causing harm and despair to others. Just yesterday, a woman narrated how she was kidnapped a few weeks ago and forced by her capturers to deliver a premature foetus. Whether or not this baby was trafficked or killed is still not known but this goes on to show the depth of how some individuals would go to earn money for survival.
When some individuals make money, they end up making irrational decisions. I have seen many people lose control of themselves when “awoof” money lands. Suddenly a man who was looking for money to pay his children's fees would be spotted at a bar feeding hungry women who care so little about him except his pocket. Another lady would be found buying items she would never need in years to come. The problem here isn't money itself but the humans who are responsible for making rational choices.
Can you think of any examples where money has actually done some good, like helping people in need or supporting good causes?
Money has been and will always be a major means of exchange in decades to come. During wars, it is money that is used to purchase relief materials for affected victims. Money is also what the government uses to provide basic social amenities to its citizens. In Akwa Ibom, it was reported that the ex-governor and current Senate President, Sen. God'swill Akpabio spent over ₦108 billion in constructing federal roads. This alone has reduced the rate of accidents amongst traders who make up a greater percentage of travellers. Money has always served good causes and will always do so.
How do you personally see money in your own life? Do you think of it as a tool to achieve your goals and create opportunities, or do you have a different way of looking at it?
Ever heard the saying that money rules the world? How about I tell you that money controls our lives; it determines our fates and in other cases, our destinies?
I remember how my brother dreamt of specialising in a particular course in engineering. The only university that teaches that course so well is in Germany. Its tuition fees cost between €3, 000 - €26, 000/year. My brother had to settle for another course in Nigeria since my parents couldn't afford this money.
Believe me when I say that money rules the world and sometimes decides our destinies. This is what I believe.
Have you ever seen situations where people doing anything for money caused problems or made things unfair?
The lack of money or the want of it has brought not only good but bad consequences as well. Some people would do anything to amass as much money into their pockets. It's why we have classrooms without sufficient desks. It's why some people work but earn less than the average pay. It's why most pensioners still haven't gotten their full gratuity. It is because the people in the position of providing these things have chosen their selfish interest over doing what is morally right.
Money can never be the root of all evil. God forbid! It has served so many good purposes. The issue here is man's insubordinate desires which cloud his judgement most times leading him to commit various moral wrongs, thereby, causing others pain.
