What do you understand by the word "AGE GAP" and when can we say there is one in a relationship?

Age gap refers to the age difference between two people involved in mostly romantic relationships. It is synonymous with age difference or age bracket. It happens when either the man, woman or binary partner is way older than the other. For instance, Catherine weds Charles who is older than her by 6 years. One might say that the age gap, age difference or age bracket is closely aligned, not a wide range.

Do you think Age Gap is a problem in a relationship?

Yes. But there are exceptions though. Let's dive deeper!

Does the Age gap really have a way of affecting relationships? Explain and give some examples.

I'll highlight 2 ways this can affect partners in a relationship.

1. Grooming

Most elderly men and families are oftentimes guilty of this. These men date young girls as young as 18 to groom them. Grooming involves brainwashing them with their ideologies so they can control them. At 16-21, most girls are still dependent and ignorant of the realities of the world. These people exploit their vulnerability, date them at younger ages and train them in ways "they expect their women to be". These ladies become more docile and prone to abuse. They wouldn't even know this except if someone pointed this out.

A church member of mine was a victim. She dated this man from age 16. He discouraged her from being ambitious. He said that girls who achieved more rarely married. He made her see getting married to him as a priority. The poor girl, a victim of puppy love, fell head over heels for him. She disobeyed her family and still got married to him. He promised to send her to school after she bore the first child. He never did. Today, she has 3 kids, no skills, no work and a suitcase of problems. Her man said he'll employ lecturers who will come teach her at home. He said girls who go to university get spoiled. It's been 3 years and no lecturer has visited their home yet.

2. Gold digging
Marrying or dating someone with a wide range age bracket usually stirs up suspicion. When Regina Daniel married Ned, ndi social media in-laws began to make assumptions about the motives behind their relationship. Was it money? Was it for connection? Was it "blind and crippled" love? That's left for them to answer. The same is the case if a man decides to marry a woman who's older than him by any age difference.

Is there any age you are not comfortable with?

First, I'm too young to date. But whenever I decide to have a romantic partner, I will consider someone with a close age range. The reason is that this affords us space to grow together. As a GenZ, I can't have anything to do with a Gen X, Gen Y or Millenium or Alpha. These are clearly two different worlds with different experiences and priorities.

What should be the normal age gap in a relationship?

Everyone has their comfort zone. Some love an age bracket with a wide range while others like me prefer a more closely aligned age bracket. We are entitled to make our choices.

Love itself is complex. The beauty lies in embracing diversity and celebrating the unique connections that exist despite age disparities.
