Greetings and welcome to another edition of the green spotlight. The Green Spotlight a weekly blog were I review inspiring and interesting books geared towards whetting the reader’s appetite to actually get to read.

This is our 26th edition and it’s been an awesome ride cos in The Green Spotlight we believe that reading gives us that green light which is synonymous to success.

It’s been raining relationships lately but this week’s review is going to take a different shape. I read an interesting article on how to make small scale businesses successful. It’s more of business tips and I want to share it with us. The tittle is “10 Rules for small business Success”.

Many businesses starts every now and then and fail. Only few stands the taste of time while others go ahead and succeed. Some may even experience hiccups on the way but somehow manages to pick up and excel when the right steps are taken.

Let’s take a look at some tips for small businesses that can help to sustain it.

• If you own a small business, develop and maintain a niche for your business. A niche is like focusing on a particular aspect that reaches out to specific people instead of trying to be in all aspects which may take you out of business should a larger competitor show up in your vicinity.

• In carving out a niche, make your business unique, it’s okay to copy from your competitors but don’t be a copycat. Be different. Let people know what your business can do for them.

Also know that first impression matter so be careful on how you relate with customers as you do not have a second chance to make a first impression.

• The success of your business has a lot to do with your reputation. Have a good reputation having in mind that referrals are one of the most effective and cheapest means to advertise your business.

Also be open to improving your business ideas and standards. Do not insist on doing things on how you have always done it. Times evolve therefore evolve too.

• Always listen to your customers and their complaints and work towards satisfying them. Customers always wants to know that they are important to you and you care about their opinions.

You should have a working plan for your business. Doing business without planning is like traveling to a strange city without direction. What are you plans towards growth and expansion?

• Innovation cannot be underestimated in small scale businesses. Times change and so do people. You have to come up with trending ways to keep your business afloat in the faces of people.

Lastly work smart. Be quick to restrategize if your present strategy is not producing results. See the areas you are lacking in and be open to partnerships that will boost your business.

My rating of the book

The article is a good one with nice tips that when expanded on and applied can help a small scale business owner.

Its succinct and also helpful. I give it a rating of 7/10.

Conclusion

It’s been a while I read articles like this and I was excited to share the one I came across with us.

If the large scale business owners who actually started small can push their business to the lime light, small business owners too can. It’s all a matter of consistency and applying the right principles.
