Instability in Nigeria, "The Rich country with Poor people".
Instability is technically the state of not being stable, uniform, united or safe.
In my country, Nigeria, I wish to address the various issues and truth pills hard to swallow in this content.
I hope as you read through, you digest the power struggles we do have and utilize them someday.
Various issues in my country
As Nigeria approaches 62 years , the problems still facing the government are :
- Unequal distribution of resources.
- Biased exploitation of resources.
- Lack of confidence in currency value.
- Lack of true interaction between government and the people .
I once heard a joke that you cannot plan in Nigeria, for the country will plan you .
Sad how true it is.
Addressing these problems
Unequal distribution of resources:
Due to embezzlement, money and other resources allocated by the government reduce and reduce before they even reach the hands of citizens.
As the number of people overcome the amount of resources ( overpopulation) , we have been asked to hustle and move on.
This is completely unacceptable and demeaning.Biased exploitation of resources :
Oil, the main income of this country will soon pass with the advent of electrical cars and solar power . In the mean time however, electricity is not ever constant and yet the prices of fuel seem to grow.
The simple act of not properly explaining this leads to distrust of the government.
Another thing that is interesting is favouritism, picking few people you know that are less capable and willing to learn to play certain critical roles in government at the federal, state and local levels.Lack of confidence in currency value :
If you are in Nigeria, you'd know that as at last week and earlier this week, the price of dollar was the highest it has ever been.
This means more Nigerian currency to buy less foreign currencies.
Now I and many people no longer want to earn in naira as it is " basically useless" and want to earn in other currencies ( of which I cannot blame them for ) further reducing our trust in our currency and in government.
To me, the devaluation of our currency would be the optimal solution.
- Lack of true interaction between government and the people :
Protests are shunned, gates are locked and speaking leaves eyes rolling. The government sometimes see no need to change what they have been doing. They've not seen or accepted the detriment it has done to us . The people at the lowest level whom can help now seem to turn their eyes away or simply close them.
As a Nigerian , I can open almost any social media platform today and see people ( innocent or not ) being taken away without their will to some place with harm (physical or not ) inflicted to either suffer because of their beliefs, gender, status , for plain evil or for financial aid/gain {POWER} .
Some do it because Nigeria wouldn't/ couldn't help them secure jobs ( as we're demographically dense) and some for revenge and/or simply money but regardless, it is not safe.
The truth is :
We are not proud of our nation.
We are ashamed of where we've found ourselves.
This is because our previous generation did not complete their mission; to make this nation liveable and loveable for their children.
And now, we are still in the battle.
Why this insurgency you may ask ?
Are we not the Giant of Africa and home to the biggest musicians and dancers?
Of course.
But we lack identity of home ( Nigeria) . We lack self- discovery. We mimic other cultures to a fault. We do not have one standard culture. We look at other more established economies and states and just wonder why God ( Allah) decided to put us here.
At a larger level, our government chosen by us don't have control over us. The democratic system in Nigeria can only go so far to sustain election dates , party primaries and talking about the budget.
And this is partly our fault.
As sad as it is , we run from our country's problems saying that it doesn't concern us or there's nothing we can do. True, it can feel like this sometimes. But let us remember the people who are 'in power ' are not totally in power. Majority also lack self concept and identity.
Am I saying globalization and it's benefits are wrong?
Surely not.
But let's not lose ourselves.
After finding out our identity, the second way is to become consciously transactional.
The Hustle Mentality [ CONCLUSION]
Apart from this issue of identity , the corruption and poverty gives birth to this hustle mentality because no one will take care of you .
But that's the entire point of government. Taking care of it's citizens. Its health, its resources, its safety and protection and its privacy.
The government needs to give us our own right to be safe. To be financially stable and to be united.
But of course it's not half as simple as it seems.
In truth many people feel if they had a way, they would have picked another country .
If we boil all these insurgencies down; and I want you to look at it this way from now on . We're in a state of power struggle. We want our ethnic group to be better than the other, we want one's religion to be better than the other, we want one race to be better than the other, and we want one person we support to dominate the other we don't support.
If aliens even existed, we would want earth to be better than them .
We can't deny it, that's how we are.
There's nothing wrong with these things.
But what we don't realise is the people we're fighting are fighting us because they think we're the enemy. They have their reasons although they may not be fair in how they go about it . Let me say that again:
Excluding psychopaths, we all have reasons
It is not our fault we were born in Nigeria. It is nothing we could possibly control. The varieties in culture, tradition and beliefs, power and leadership influence are what causes this instability .
But now we have the responsibility to create a world, a kingdom where it is our right to dominate the earth allocated to us, and make this a great nation of art, dance, music, forestry and nature, resource management, animal cultivation, culture and society building.
It is not right to have this amount of intolerance for our own country ( including every single one in it ) , forgoing culture and history and heritage and have enough tolerance to put ourselves in a box, where many foreigners run from us .
Think of the ones that you love but are younger than you.
If you died and left them, would you want them to continue struggling and suffering because a country is not sufficiently taking care of it's citizens? Would you wait till kingdom come?
What should we as a people do then ?
Let us firstly not neglect the politics of this country. Many things happen because we do not know our right or ignore it.
Let us become transactional when dealing with other countries even in little things.
Let us encourage and never discourage people from other ethnic groups or religion or economic standing.
Let us appreciate our food as we love our Ankara and be on the journey to find our Identity and seek help where we do not know how without trading the dignity of this country.
We're not just the most populous black ( brown) country on earth.
We're the most resourceful and self loving people on earth too. And one day, our children and generations to come will be able to shout proudly:
" I'm a Nigerian"
I hereby invite @kay-owobia and @ememudoh to participate and share their views on the insecurity and instability in their countries.
