From google play store

An easy-to-remember and unique mapping and navigation tool that divides the globe into a series of smaller grid squares which makes it possible for locations in areas where traditional street addresses are not well-defined or do no exist.

What3words is the perfect example of the description outlined above. Virtually everyone uses _what3words location _ when citing location of places. I knew about this somewhat complicated word when I joined steemit. I thought it was more like a literal or word that has its definition from something not knowing the word itself is explanatory.

Most of us do use this word unaware of what it means. Below is what I've discovered about what3words. Is it just a location tool? Let's see

What is what3words

The name "what3words" is a combination of the words "what," "three," and "words." It is meant to be a short, easy-to-remember name that reflects the core concept of the system, which is the use of three words to identify a location.

This is a typical example of what3words...

What3words is a geocoding system that has divided the world into a grid of 3m x 3m squares and assigned each one a unique 3 word address. The goal of the system is to provide a more accurate and easier way to identify a specific location, especially in areas where street addresses are not reliable.

The system can be used to help people find and share locations more easily, and it has a number of applications, including in emergency services, logistics, and e-commerce.

Why is it called what3words and what is it's history?

The what3words system is called what3words because it uses a combination of three words to identify a specific location. These three words are chosen from a dictionary of 25,000 words, which means there are over 16 million possible combinations of three words.

Brief history of what3words

This system was developed by a company of the same name, which was founded in 2013 by Chris Sheldrick, Jack Waley-Cohen, and Michael Dent. The goal of the system is to provide a more convenient and accurate way to address locations, particularly in areas where traditional street addresses are not well-defined or do not exist.

  • Share the three words with others as a way to communicate the location. You can also copy the link and source it when posting on steemit.

Example: Ifa Atai street

  • If you want to find a location using the three words that have been shared with you, simply enter the words into the search bar on the app or website. The map will navigate to the location associated with those words.

  • It's important to note that the what3words system is not a replacement for traditional street addresses or GPS coordinates.

How does what what3words work?
  • To create the grid, the what3words algorithm first divides the globe into a series of smaller grid squares, each about the size of a city block. Then it assigns a unique combination of three words to each of these smaller squares. This process is repeated until every 3 meter by 3 meter square on the globe has been assigned a unique combination of three words.

  • To identify a specific location using what3words, you simply need to know the three words that have been assigned to that location. These words can be entered into the what3words app or website, and the map will navigate to the location associated with those words.

Is what3words location better than google map

Both what3words and Google Maps are useful tools for identifying and navigating to locations.

One advantage of what3words is that it provides a unique and easy-to-remember 3 word address for every location in the world. This can be particularly useful for addressing locations in areas where traditional street addresses are not well-defined or do not exist.
