Hi friends, I welcome you back to my blog once again. It's my pleasure that you have read and refresh your memory about the happenings in the history of our world.
Last week, we looked at the military coups in Nigeria while tip toeing into the first military coup in Africa.
Today, I want to continue with military intervention to enlighten us about the reasons why African countries encountered military interventions in their governance.
Now, did you know that military intervention in African politics was due to some specific reasons? You'd love to know, wouldn't you? Oh yes, that's why I'm here to take you down memory lane.
The chief of all reasons was the mismanagement of the national economy by the post-independent government officials. It is believed that there was corruption and abuse of office by the post-independence political leaders in the 1st and 2nd Republics of Nigeria. That was the main reason why the military intervened in order to save the country.
Secondly, the politicisation of the army, promotion of officers and domination of the military based on ethnic affiliations and favouritism, greeted the Nigerian army. These actions didn't go well with some officers.
The third reason for military intervention was the unresolved crises that rocked the regions in Nigeria. This led to the direct assumption of power of some leaders without proper transition of government.
The inability to conduct a free and fair election was another strong reason for the military intervention.
Long stay in office of some politicians (leaders). So many Nigerian leaders wanted to make themselves life president and so, the military officers had to intervene in order to force stop such leaders.
Lastly, for now, poor administration/performance in Nigeria and in Africa in general have contributed to frequent coups that occurred in the country and, indeed, Africa in general.
These and many other reasons are said to have led to the intervention of the military in African/Nigerian politics.
After many years of independence, we are still hearing of military interventions in African politics in countries such as Sudan, Mali, Gabon, Guinea, Chad, Burkina Faso and Niger.
Do you think the military were justified in their reasons for interrupting in African politics? Your comment will be highly valued.
