Hi friends, it's your friend again. I welcome you all to my blog. I know you're excited about reading a fresh edition of "Did You Know?" Your regular history content here on Steem4Nigeria.
Last week, I brought to you the first ethnic organisation in Nigeria, speaking about the Nigerian Youth Movement (NYM). This week, I've brought to you an interesting edition of which I'm sure you would love.
Did you know that the qualification to vote that everyone today enjoys from 18 years in Nigeria was restricted to only male adults with a gross income of at least €50 per anum? This means you would've worked so hard to earn such an amount to be able to participate in voting during elections.
This truly limited many Nigerians' voting after the elective principle was introduced in 1922.
Did you also know it was later in 1954 that women of the southern and eastern regions of Nigeria gained their voting rights to begin to vote and the women of the northern region gained theirs as late as 1979?
Are you surprised? No, you shouldn't be. Many privileges we enjoy today as Nigerians weren't so in the past. This was courtesy of the British colonial policy.
Thank you for reading, I remain your historian friend @eveetim.💕 Feel free to make your contributions in the comment, I'll love to hear from you.
