Working remotely is also known as working virtually; in other words, it refers to the act of working outside an official office. Many individuals tend to prefer working outside a traditional office environment instead of a company's physical workspace. A good example is me. What could be the reason?
COST SAVINGS:
Working virtually helps a lot when it comes to cost savings for employees. Places like Lagos State, River’s State, and Calabar experience high traffic, where buses stay for hours in traffic before employees arrive at their workplaces. Some areas in Nigeria experience high transportation costs, and this keeps on increasing each day. Working virtually helps such ones work at their convenience and avoid the consequences mentioned above; in other words, it saves costs.
FLEXIBILITY
Many people find it difficult to be creative when people are around because of distractions, but they prefer a private and calm area where they can think and comprehend, get inspiration, and display their creativity. I find it relaxing and creative when I am alone to work as a designer.
INCREASE PRODUCTIVITY
Research shows that remote workers are more likely to be productive compared to in-office workers because they have time to scale through their work, have fewer interruptions, and have the ability to customize their workspace. As a graphic designer, I am always more productive when I work from home.
LIFESTYLE FLEXIBILITY
As a remote worker, you have the freedom to make plans regarding traveling, hanging out, pursuing hobbies, or even spending good time with your family and friends. Remote work flexibility allows workers to make decisions based on what they view as important. As a graphic designer, after 1-3 hours of design, I do give myself a break, maybe by playing games that engage me in what matters to me at that moment.
CUSTOMIZED WORKSPACE
Graphic designers love to work in an environment that evokes creativity, so working remotely helps you customize your workspace to your taste to enhance productivity and comfort.
ACCESS TO GLOBAL OPPORTUNITIES
Working remotely as a graphic designer gives you more room for new opportunities in your field and beyond your limitations. You can dialogue with other clients around the world with ease, expanding your network and increasing your earning potential.
While we enjoy the benefit of working remotely, we should also understand that it has its own disadvantages. Below are the disadvantages of working remotely, maybe as a designer, content writer, online research video editor, medical transcriptionist, web developer, data specialist, or even as a Steemian.
ISOLATION
Remote work can be so isolating, especially if you’re living as a single man. You may lose the opportunity for good interactions with friends and family. As a designer, you may quickly be tired out.
COMMUNICATION CHALLENGES
As a visual identifier, your communication skills matter a lot. In this regard, most graphics designers who are not effective in their speaking skills tend to develop their communication skills via daily conversation. Isolating yourself by working remotely from home may hinder your effectiveness in communication.
DISTRACTIONS AT HOME
I can boldly say that without self-discipline, one may not succeed as a remote designer because, while working virtually requires flexibility, it also requires discipline. Trying to keep up with household chores or family responsibilities can disrupt your workflow as a designer.
I hope you’ve learned something new today. As a graphic designer, I choose to work remotely. This kind of choice may differ based on your specialty or your skills, but from my own perspective, working remotely offers a lot of advantages to me and my career. I know you love it too, as a Steemian. The decision to love it too should be based on your preferences.
