Hello Steem4nigeria, trust we all are doing great. It's a pleasure participating and contest titled Some Disgusting traditions of my country published by @okere-blessing.
Nigeria is home to a rich and diversity of cultures and practices which some are deeply embedded in the textile of community, while others are viewed critically especially by the younger generation. though there are a lot of cultural practices in my country Nigeria doesn't mean I should promote or practice all as most cultural practices are contradict to Bible principles.
and most cultural practices seems disgusting and confusing. Aside from that, it's wouldn't be and easy task to go round all the tribes to practice their culture especially as nigeria is obsessed with divers tribe and culture.
Disgusting Traditions in Nigeria |
---|
There are some tradition practice in my country that seem disgusting and aren't safe to practice. Let's explore some below...
- Female Genital Mutilation:
When I was researching I came across this being part of Nigerian culture, and it's very disgusting and come with a lot of health consequences and detriments, female reproductive organs to be specific. though this practice is not universal across all Nigerian cultures but still prevalent in some region.
these people practice it with the belief that it will ensure cleanliness but turn out to be harmful, The procedure is harmful and have consequences making it widely condemned both in Nigeria and all other beliefs in the world.
Witchcraft Trials: In some Nigerian communities like Akwa Ibom, Cross River, tarabar and few where people especially children are accused of witchcraft and subjected to inhumane treatment. These trials and beliefs are often arise from superstition or fear of supernatural powers, leading to abuse and other damage.
Child Marriage: I've been hearing of the cultural practices though I haven't witness of take part in any before, it is less prevalent nowadays but is still practiced in some parts of Nigeria. It happens particularly in the northern regions of Nigeria (Hausas).
Young girls sometimes as young as 12 to 14 are married off to older men which often denying them access to education and leading to tough health detriment associated with early pregnancies.
Are Traditions Fading Away?In Nigeria traditions are still held in high esteem especially in rural environment and among older people. It is of more advantage as modernization and exposure to global influences have lead to changes in how some traditions are practice and operate.
Young nigerians are still questioning and challenging certain practices especially those that seems harmful or discriminatory in other to maintain a better living and avoid tribal segregation.
Occasions Demanding Traditional Practices for Legal RecognitionA traditional marriage I attended some months ago
here Nigeria, there are instances where traditional rites or customs are still required to legalize certain actions or make them official, which we can deviate as it's have no harm. in cases like....⬇️
Marriage: It common that many marriages in Nigeria are first celebrated according to traditional customs before being formalized in a court of law I I'm I also in support and witness most of them, these rites, such as the bride price payment and other ceremonies are very important and compulsory in most ethnic groups.
Chieftaincy Titles: here in my country before a person can hold a chieftaincy title they must undergo a series of traditional rituals and ceremonies depending on the local customs of the region.
Funeral Rites: In some Nigerian cultures, proper burial rites are essential for the deceased to be buried, These traditions are considered more important than modern legal processes and it's the most popular manner to get it done.
Favorite Nigerian Traditionone of the culture I cherish most is the Ekpo culture which is significant here in my tribe in Ibibio tradition. though I don't fancy most what most people belief and regard it as the connection between the living, ancestors and gods.
once attended a festival in calabar
I love it because it maintains social order and preserves cultural heritage. Ekpo masquerades are also an integral part of Ibibio festivities and entertainment, it is use to symbolize various aspects of Ibibio culture. I do also admire their drums and dance, when I was a kid I did enjoy following them when they in the street or cultural ceremonies.
In conclusion, almost every countries in the world have different cultures and beliefs which they practice and hold in esteem. Though some traditions are disgusting and isn't safe to practice if considering the conflict it have to our religion beliefs and health, while most gives good reasons to promote our cultural heritage.
