It's sad news to all the Akwa Ibomites who live in the Ikom environs for the failure of her day's celebration. This had not happened in the history of the Akwa Ibom Union in Ikom LGA before.
Today the entire Akwa Ibom State is celebrating and the federal government has declared a public holiday for AKS.
Here in Ikom, we have different meetings based on local government areas that make up the AKS. Ours is "Ukanafon Urukunam Progressive Union is also known as Annang.
Before today, we had already prepared for today's celebration and we task ourselves to see how this day will bring great success to the union.
Since 9:00AM, the planning committee had been moving around to make sure that all that was needed was made available in the Venue. But as all things were set, including the venue that had been used yearly for the celebration, we only received a call from the union's chairman that no one should go to the field! The reason is, in the just concluded election, the candidate that lost, said it was partiality and therefore litigated the matter.
The instruction is, that anyone who is found in the field should be apprehended by the Police. We obeyed the voice of our Chairman and we packed all the food and drinks to the Chairman's house.
We drank and ate all the food but still, it didn't feel like celebrating Akwa Ibom Day as usual. This had not just brought shame to the Iboms but something more than that!
The food and drinks we bought, we had equally shared amongst ourselves and those neighbors around the celebration venue, equally took part in the celebration.
In conclusion, the information was nobody should be seen in the field and we all respected the order. The truth is, we were not really happy for all that happened!
We have to send signals to other members that the celebration will be taking place in our chairman's house. It was this challenge that led to the masquerade which came out before the Akwa Ibom Day Celebration. You can find details of that post
