Ok so, let's get right into the questions and answers.

Part I -. Say in your own words and based on what was explained in class: What is law?

Law as I understand are a set of rules and regulations by which any given society is governed.

Considering the explanations given in class, according to the law and the laws of your country, I pointed out two examples of "Objective Law" and two examples of "Subjective Law".Case study: A citizen is driving a vehicle on the road and disregards the traffic light. Seconds later he is stopped by a traffic police officer and this citizen claims that he disregarded the traffic light because he was in a hurry to pick up his son and take him to the hospital because he is feeling unwell. Based on what you have learned, tell us in which part of the case Objective Law and Subjective Law are present.

The objective law will apply in the case that the man disregarded the traffic light. The light is put there for the safety of all citizens including himself and anyone violating it can harm both himself and other citizens who use the road.
I think this is one of the reasons fine tickets are given to offenders because they broke a law that must be applied regardless of a person's Will like I learnt in the class.

The subjective law here is the fact that the man's son has a right to medical care. He can call an ambulance while he's also on his way to him.Defying the traffic light can get him (the father) hurt or even an innocent road user.

Part II- Based on what you have explained in class, make a comparison and according to the law of your country. Give an example of a law and an example of a norm

Comparison between a law and a norm.

• A law is legally binding by the government of a state and applies as long as one is within the boundaries of that state. While a a norm is not bound by the state but by the respective social institutions that create them and this can change from institution to institution.

• A law is constant and applies wherever it is found except in rare few cases of exemptions. While norms can change based on the social circle that sets them up.

Example of law in my country is : stealing
Stealing is a law and whosoever is caught faces the law irrespective of tribe, or region in Nigeria.

Example of a norm is Sexual immorality.
Immorality is frowned at in certain social stratas especially the north but it isn't a law in Nigeria.

Case study:Mr. Juan Perez rents an apartment but his financial situation is getting worse and he has not paid for 3 months. On one occasion, a meeting of apartment owners was held and the owner of the apartment where Mr. Juan Perez lives brought the case to the attention of the owners of the other apartments. They took the opportunity to say that they have received complaints from the neighbors of the building because Mr. Juan Perez has 4 dogs as pets in his apartment, something that is prohibited in the building's rules of coexistence. Analyze and explain in which part of the case Mr. Juan Perez is violating a law and in which part he is violating a norm.

According to the explanation given in the class, a law is

The instrument for social coexistence.

In Nigeria, paying rent is a legal requirement. It is part of the tenancy agreement for moving into any apartment and it is binding by law, hence Mr Perez is violating a law.
Secondly, if Mr Joan signed a "no pet' agreement which most times is part of the tenancy agreement, then he is violating a law and legal actions can be taken against him.

In the case where this isn't part of the agreement, then Mr Joan is violating a norm as a norm isn't set by the state but by social groups to regulate behaviour.

Part III-. Explain in your own words what importance Comparative Law has for you according to what you have seen in class.

Comparative law is a very important part of law making here in Nigeria as it can help us in the reforming of different areas of our legal system especially in the criminal justice system.
It can also help us better see and understand the development of legal systems over time, how things change and better ways to adapt to them in law making.
