Hello guys,
I am @peacebala
From Nigeria
✅Do you believe in all the traditions of your country? If yes, prove, No, share your thoughts with us.
My country Nigeria is a nation blessed with so many ethnic and tribal groups with beautiful cultures and traditions. We have three major ethnic groups which include the Igbos who are predominantly located in the Eastern part of the nation, the Yorubas in the West and the Hausas in the North. Asides these three major ethnic groups, we have over 250 other ethnic groups but are minority compared to the Igbos, Hausas and Yorubas.
I do not believe in all the traditions of my country because I feel some are just abracadabra and not real. For some, I feel it's very disgusting while for others, I see it as a violation of an individual's fundamental human right.
✅Can you mention at most 3 Disgusting traditions of your country that you forbid and why?
Hmmmm..., talking about disgusting traditions of my country, the list is endless but I'll mention just three as requested by this contest.
- Forcing an individual to drink the water they use in washing a human dead body: This tradition is common in some part of the country even though it's gradually fading away. This tradition takes place when one is being suspected and accused of having a hand in the dead of another individual. As a way of proving his/her innocence, he/she is being given the water used to bath the corpse to drink. This is very disgusting and I forbid it because of the health implications and trauma poised on the alleged suspect
- Female genital mutilation: This tradition is still being practiced in some part of the country. It's a tradition carried out mostly on young teenagers. This tradition is believed to keep young ladies from having coitus before getting married. This tradition has left a lot of ladies with sexual transmitted disease because a single blade can be used for several ladies without proper sterilization. Most ladies are usually traumatized due to the pains they are being subjected to. In few scenarios, we see ladies loosing their lives due to bleeeding.
- Giving out ones wife to a guest to have coitus with: Sounds funny but it's a tradition practiced here in Nigeria were a man will offer his wife to have coitus with his guest just to satisfy him. Aside the Biblical aspect of pushing the wife to commit adultery, I see it as a serious violation of an individual's fundamental rights. It's so so disgusting to even discuss this in the first place. Damn.... What a tradition.
✅Are traditions in your country still held in high esteem, or are they fading away?
It's mostly the elders who still hold traditions in high esteem. This generation full of Gen-Z's have little or no regards at all for tradition.
Tradition is really fading away in my country as the world gets global and keeps advancing. Most people are neglecting their traditions and clinging to latest happenings.
✅What are those occasions that demand traditions to be performed before they become legal?
For a tradition to become legal, the council of elders together with the king discuss and deliberate over it. Thereafter, they consult the gods of the land to ensure they are on the right path after which a prayer is being offered in form of sacrifice.
My invites:
The issue of forcing a suspect to drink the water used in bathing a dead body is something to really talk about. This practice have been in existence for long, though it's fadding away gradually but some ethnic groups still practice it.
How can you force someone to drink water used in bathing a dead body just to prove your innocence, what now happens if the person is innocent? Won't the water have effect on the person, all this are questions that are begging for answers. I wish you good luck.
