Pepper Soup
Peppersoup is a soup from fractions of West Africa, apparently, Nigeria that is prepared with the use of different meats, chili peppers as well as calabash nutmeg as fundamental ingredients. It's a spicy soup that has a light, watery texture considered to be a delicacy by a few people in Western Africa, and is believed to have medicinal qualities.
Pepper Soup is a spicy and light soup traditionally prepared using goat meat, sometimes with fish, chicken, or any other meat, herbs, and Nigerian traditional spices. Pepper soup is a tasty and delightful Nigerian recipe that merges the scented flavors of ehuru alongside traditional goat's meat, a generous quantity of crayfish is added for additional flavor.
It is known for its restorative, comforting, and universally testy powers. Although it may have a good number of differences, no recipe is perfect without its traditional or distinctive seasoning blend made up of spices such as ataiko (Alligator pepper), uda, uziza, or saint leave.
Peppersoup is quite spicy and goes well with either palm wine, a cold bottle of beer, or a soft drink. Although it is served as an appetizer mostly at official gatherings, pepper soup is more famous at pubs. In Nigeria, pepper soup is served mostly at "leisure spots" as a recreational or "feel good" dish.

Pepper soul originated in West Africa as well as the Caribbean. However, the slave trade inevitably brought it to North America where it was popularized by colonial black women as street food in the 1800s. It became a symbolic culinary staple of Philadelphia, its popularity is often described in relation to the modern Philly Cheesesteak.
Before Pepper soup became a signature dish in Philadelphia where colonial black women prepared and sold smoking hot servings as street sellers throughout the 19th century, it was first made in West Africa and the Caribbean. A painting was even made by John Lewis Keimmel that portrays a Black woman doling out pepper soup to a group of famished people in Philadelphia.

Well, I would say yes, but Pepper soup is one Nigerian recipe that one cannot stay for quite a long time without having. Its savory, hot, and pepperish taste would make one always want some more like Oliver Twist. Additionally, besides being served at leisure spots as a recreational or feel-good dish, it is also served at ceremonies as most people prefer it to other delicacies. The ingredients used in preparing pepper soup which is medicinal also make this recipe an interval-taken food.

Pepper isn't so complex in preparing and as well doesn't take too long. Below are the steps taken to prepare this wonderful, tasty, and well-scenting recipe.
- Ingredients (Goat-meat Pepper Soup)
• Goat meat (cut into bite-size)
• Water
• Pepper soup spice mix (listed below)
• Grounded crayfish
• Seasoning cubes
• Utazi or Scent leave
• Dry pepper
• Ehuru/Ehiri
• Salt
• Palm oil (for finishing)
Other Ingredients like ginger, lemon grass, cloves, and garlic are optional
Pepper soup spice mix
• Urheri (Selim grains), bitter seeds discarded
• Erhe Seeds (calabash nutmeg), shelled
• Gbafilo seeds, (shelled, and seeds roughly chopped)
• Umilo seeds, (shelled and seeds roughly chopped)
• Alligator pepper (grains of paradise)
• Uziza seeds
- Preparation Process
• In a large stockpot, put the goat meat, 2 cups water (or more depending on the quantity of the meat), 1 tablespoon of pepper soup spice mix (or more depending on the meat quantity), add ground crayfish, a pinch of dry pepper, and the salt (to taste). Stir adequately and bring to a cook over medium-high heat.
• After the liquid has attained a boil, add additional quantity of water, seasoning cubes, chili, or habanero peppers as well as the pepper soup spice mix. Cook steadily on medium to medium-low heat up the time the meat is tender, but not yet falling off the bone, which is between 30-40 minutes.
• Add utazi or scent leaves or lime leaf, taste bouillon and adjust salt and seasoning dry pepper, finish with a drizzle of palm oil and take off the heat. Allow infusing for between 5-10 minutes. Pepper is ready to be served.
Serve with agidi, boiled yam, or plantains, palm wine, chilled beer, or soft drink.

Nigerian Pepper Soup can be served hot with a lot of foods ranging from agidi to white rice, boiled yam or plantain, cooked potatoes or palm wine, beers or soft drinks, whichever you choose.
Many times, people relish pepper soup for its sweetness as well as its zesty outburst of flavors, not having half the knowledge about its several medicinal advantages derived from the spices, however with the entire knowledge of the supernatural curative qualities absorbed in every simmer of the pepper soup, it could make for one of the best African dishes ever and probably the most sought after.
Consequently, besides the delightful taste of pepper soup, I will recommend this recipe for its medicinal advantages.

In my place we call it light soup and its mostly suitable for people with less appetite. Normal people usually take it with fufu and sometimes Banku. It’s good for regulating the body temperature. Thanks for sharing.

Pepper soup☺️. Something very similar to what we call light soup in Ghana. Infact I am sure they have a similar way of preparing both soups.
Anyways I will still wanna try the pepper soup out and see for myself, although I am sure it will be tasty 😋 I am still optimistic that the light soup prepared by Ghanaians will taste better 😂
