The Steem4Nigeria Community is always bent on producing interesting and educative contests for its audience and I appreciate the team for its good work thus far. Another interesting contest presented here is titled Marital Statement "For Better For Worse" by @josepha.

The phrase “for better or for worse” is one of the most common phrases used in marriage vows, and yet the meaning behind it can be difficult to understand. This phrase is often used to describe relationships, commitments, and other agreements between two or more people, but, the question is what has been the impact of this phrase as regards to marriage over time? Follow my post, as I share my understanding on this topic.

In simple terms, the phrase “for better or for worse” means “in all circumstances, whether good or bad.” In other words, it means that no matter what happens, you will stay committed to a person, situation, or promise. This phrase is typically used to demonstrate a strong bond between two people, who will remain dedicated to each other regardless of what may come their way.

The phrase “for better or for worse” has been used for centuries in many different forms. It first appeared in the Bible, in the book of Genesis 2:24, when God said to Adam and Eve that “a man shall leave his father and mother and cleave to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” This is one of the earliest examples of a marriage vow, in which the couple commits to staying together regardless of the circumstances.

The phrase was then adopted by the Church of England in 1549 when the Book of Common Prayer was introduced. This book was a compilation of prayers and services used in churches throughout the country, and included a wedding ceremony that concluded with the phrase “for better or worse”. This phrase became a part of the traditional wedding ceremony and continues to be used today.

Since then, the phrase has been used in literature and film, often to denote a commitment to remain together despite any difficulties that may arise. The phrase is also used in everyday life to express a promise or loyalty to someone or something, such as a job or relationship.

Yes, I support the statement "for better for worse," because this statement is originally meant to be said out of genuine love for each other, expressing acceptance of whatever life throws at you.

Although we can't correctly predict the future, everyone sincerely hopes to live a better life, usually with a good and compatible partner. In a situation where you believe you have made the right choice and chosen someone you truly love and that the person loves you back, then I think this issue of "for better for worse" shouldn't be a problem.

As I said earlier, Love is the key to a successful marriage, and the making of vows is just for formalities, and a way of expressing resilience and determination in the face of uncertainty. Although many regards it as a risk, I regard it as commitment, which is a very important and necessary aspect of marriage.

I can't deny the fact that this statement has been wrongly used and interpreted throughout various marriages, because I have seen situations where people marry out of material things, and not love, making their marriage a living hell even after the vows has been made.

It might interest you to know that the phrase "for better or worse" is not only applicable to marriage ceremonies because, in our today's world, it's also now used to pledge vows in businesses and investments, where two parties would agree to remain persistent regardless of whether it turns out to be profitable or not.

I have seen situations where these vows were made, especially in marriages. The priest in charge of joining the two couples would ask them if they were willing to stay together forever including times when they would have money and times when they won't have money, and in times of sickness or health, till the day they would leave this world.

Personally, I have had such vows in several situations, although it was temporary (as long as the business lasted). It was a business between me and some school friends. A school project which we all agreed to invest in and develop, after which we would collectively sell when the project work is over. We all vow to remain loyal and supportive throughout this project with all our abilities no matter the difficulty and sentiment we might face in the future.

I would refashion it to be "With Love And Commitment, We Would Stay Together Forever." This statement is more of an instruction than a declaration, but the main aim of this is to remind the couples that love and commitment are what would keep them together forever even in good and bad times.

When thinking of a happy home, I will always suggest you see love being shown to you by your soon-to-be partner before venturing into making vows that might cage you into marrying the wrong man.

Commitment is your personal determination to remain in a marriage, not because of a vow you made because a promise can be broken at any time, but what is felt in the heart usually never dies.

Ultimately, for better or for worse is an important reminder of the importance of resilience and perseverance in any relationship. No matter what may come our way, our commitment to each other will stay strong.
