An illiteracy Eradication Campaign in my community

Good day great steemians family,hope we are all doing well? Happy weekend.

I hail from Ezzen, Mada station of Nasarawa Eggon LGA of Nasarawa State,Nigeria.

The above community where I came from has some prominent learned personal but still has quite a number of individuals who can not read nor write.

Both youth and adult,men and women,some have obtained some levels of education but still battling to read and write. and after schooling,people returned back home doing nothing,.

So,i and two of my friends by name Alexander peter and Timothy Dauda came up with an idea to start an association with the aims of eradicating or reducing the numbers of iliterate in the community.
The association’s aims are as follows

• To alleviate poverty - To reduce the number of illiteracy - To bring unity among the community - To bring cooperation and love among the community. - To empower the youth through teaching skills acquisition.

What is illiteracy?

Illiteracy refers to the inability to read and write. It can limit individuals' access to education, employment, and information, contributing to social and economic challenges. Efforts to address illiteracy often involve literacy programs, educational reforms, and promoting access to quality education. Global initiatives aim to reduce illiteracy rates and enhance literacy skills to empower individuals and communities.

From the above definitions, illiteracy can hinder community development, and affect the economy too. So the three of us decided to set up an association with the name
Ezzen Students and Youth Association (ESAYA).

As I have stated earlier, the association is to help develop and bring unity, especially among the students and youth of the community.

We mobilized the community for the first hosting of the program by printing fliers and we shared them with churches and mosques around to pass the announcement, the meeting was held on the 2nd of January 2024.

People turn out with a total number of people in attendance of 150. We have three facilitators( guest speakers) Namely: Mr Sunday Mamman ( medical laboratory scientist) Mr. Balarabe Usman ( lecturer) Mr Attah Bulus(veterinary doctor )

We gave each of them a topic to teach on and the topics are:
Mr. Balarabe deliberates on the topic
Education as a tool to eradicate illiteracy

-Mr. Attah deliberates on the topic of

Career choice

while
Mr. Sunday talks about
entrepreneurship and skills acquisition.

The meeting started around noon and ended by 4 pm. We use the community primary school as the venue for the meeting.

We are hoping to host more of this kind of meeting soon with more features so it can help youth to be independent and also looking forward for sponsorship of the programs as some of the activities requires funds.

I advise youth to always involves in legit works that will make them independent instead of being idol and depending on others for daily bread.
