Good day my fellow steemians. How was your weekend? Today is Sunday, so we're starting a new week. I'm grateful to God for a bubbling weekend. I'm so happy to be a participant in this contest. This is my first time on this particular competition. I have to acknowledge @bebton3 for organizing such an interesting contest. It will help sharpen or enhance my drawing skills because I will make sure I continue in the subsequent ones. Let's get down to work.

Have You Ever Seen One?

You know since a woodpecker is a bird I may have seen it flying pass me without knowing it. I have been hearing about it often during my childhood. Talking about seeing it I would say I have seen it several times in different movies, especially foreign movies. It's one of the bird I would love seeing it working. I have heard so many things about it.
The ones I usually see in movies are so colourful like parrots. You can even mistaken a woodpecker for a parrot. They look colourful and resemble each other.

What Type Of Animal Is It?

From what I have learnt after doing my research I have found out that woodpecker is part of a bird's family.
It is one of several species of bird from the family Picidae, with a sharp beak suitable for pecking holes in wood.
They exist almost everywhere, except the following countries: New Guinea, New Zealand, Madagascar, Australia and the extreme polar regions. Most species live in forests or woodland habitats, although a few species are known that live in treeless areas, such as rocky hillsides and deserts.

What Are Its Characteristics And What Makes It Unique?

Here are a few characteristics and uniqueness of the bird. It has some features that can't be compared to other birds. Just go through its features and tell me the ones you love.

Characteristics

  1. Being omnivores in nature, woodpeckers eat a mix of foods. They target insects, spiders, seeds, nuts and acorns, as well as fruit and sap, and will even sip nectar from a hummingbird feeder on occasion.

  2. For its different features, here’s one of the most helpful woodpecker facts. In most species, males and females look similar. The only way to tell them apart is by red accents that are sometimes present on males.
Other male and female members of the woodpecker families are more distinct.

  3. I found amazing woodpecker facts from their head to their toes! With four toes. The first and fourth facing backward, the second and third facing forward. They woodpeckers can navigate up and around tree trunks.
However two types of woodpeckers, the American three-toed and the black-backed, have three toes instead of four on each foot. This makes them different from other birds.

  4. I also found out that woodpeckers are mostly cavity nesters that excavate their own nest spots in dead or dying trees. The cavities will usually hold three to six eggs, and both parents tend the young birds. Woodpeckers sleep in cavities throughout the year. They don't build nest from leaves like other birds

  5. In North America, the downy is the smallest and most widespread woodpecker. The largest is the pileated woodpecker.
This makes them different and variant.

  6. I have also found out that woodpeckers fly in an undulating pattern similar to that of goldfinches. It's known that the bird flaps its wings during the rising phase, then glides as it descends into the valley of the wave.

  7. For the bird to be able o reach deep into crevices in search of grubs, ants and sap, a woodpecker’s tongue can be up to a third of its total body length. it is so long that when it’s retracted, it coils around the back of the bird’s skull.

  8. The woodpecker listen for the sounds of insects crawling and chewing in the wood of a tree before using their strong, sharp bills to capture their prey. Especially the hairy woodpecker. That's such an amazing feature.

  9. These amazing birds use their bills for two behaviors: drilling and drumming. They use their sharp beaks to drill into trees to find food or to make holes for nesting and roosting in spring and fall. They can achieve that easily because the have a very strong muscles in their head and neck.

Uniqueness

Some woodpecker live in large groups all year and can harvest and hide huge quantities of food in fall to feed on in winter and spring. Something some birds can't relate.
Some other woodpeckers are desert birds. The Gila woodpecker thrives in the nearly treeless desert habitats of the southwestern United States and Mexico. These woodpeckers excavate holes in living saguaro cactuses, allow the plants to dry out and then inhabit them. The nest can’t be used for several months. What a wonderful feat. most bird can't achieve that.
