Researchers find a giant "sea cockroach" in the depths of the ocean
The ocean is like space for man, there is so much to explore and discover that it seems impossible to predict the number of species and creatures we do not know. That's why, when we find something new, it's so fascinating. Although when it comes to the depths, fascinating is not usually the word that best defines it.
The snapshots we see are the work of a team of researchers led by Peter Ng, head of the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum at the National University of Singapore. The team apparently discovered and collected a large number of creatures in the last two weeks.
The team used several deep-water exploration tools and reports that the average exploration depth was about 800 meters, with the deepest area at 2,100 meters.
Among the captures, they were able to discover more than 12,000 deep-sea creatures, made up of 800 different species of more than 200 families of sponges, jellyfish, mollusks, starfish, urchins, worms, crabs, shrimps and fish.
In addition, the team also discovered more than 12 new species of marine life, being the one called Bathynomus raksasa that we see in the images the most spectacular. Something like a giant cockroach.
The creature is a giant isopod that can usually be found collecting the remains of dead marine animals on the ocean floor. In fact, these isopods are colloquially called "marine cockroaches" and have an average growth rate of 33 centimeters (some can grow up to 50 centimeters like the newly discovered ones).
By the way, if you find them disgusting, it's all a matter of taste. In Japan, isopods are so popular that they are used as stuffed pets.
