Last week one of the Governments announcements was to allow the sale of cigarettes from the 1st May. What happens next is crazy as they overturned it as they received a petition of 2000 signatures. There are millions of smokers so where is their voice in this. I just see the priorities and the way things are being handled is totally wrong raising questions as to why.
I am an ex smoker who happened to work in the tobacco industry and I find this unfair and uncalled for. This isn't going to stop smoking as it just goes underground turning it into a thriving black market. I wish I had my contacts I had 25 years ago as I would definitely be selling them.
The ban on alcohol sales I can understand but smoking I cannot fathom the reasons why. I know the poorer people will still smoke and with the scarcity will probably end up sharing passing a cigarette between a group of them making it worse.

The latest updated list with some new things allowed from the 1st May.
The health minister two nights ago agreed that it was to stop people passing a "zol" amongst each other. She was referencing weed and someone in her stature shouldn't be joking about things like that. I somehow think these idiots have celebrity status yet they can hardly speak properly. She spoke her broken English and flipped into Zulu leaving the other half of the country guessing as to what was being said. South Africa has many languages and why English is spoken as the universal language.

Surely this type of behavior is more important as coming directly from the hospitals and should have been incenerated.
I have heard that the shop keepers who have independent stores are having a roaring trade selling cigarettes and good luck to them. You will most likely find the 2000 signatures are all people benefiting from the thriving black market and would like to see the ban remain in place.
Johan Rupert who is the man behind such brands as Peter Stuyvesant and Rothmans which are top sellers here donated over 1 billion to the government to help with Covid-19. I am sure he is regretting this now as his business has been kicked in the teeth by the goverments actions.
I know the market was under attack by illegal counterfeit cigarettes before lock down so this is just helping criminal activity even more. The more I look around the world at it's leaders it is the stupids leading the stupids. Why has everyone allowed this to happen and how did it get so bad. There is no common sense and it seems to be all about personal gain. What happened to leading your country because you care about your people?
ex smoker here too, gave it up a long time ago, and I think to take smoking away from ppl who do it at a time like this smdh is unbelievable but when it comes to the state and their nonsensical intrusion into people's lives I am not surprised by this at all
