Cuando mi esposo me propuso visitar Glendalough y me hizo referencia que el lugar había sido escogido por Jhon Boorman para rodar algunas escenas del film Excalibur alusiva a las aventuras del rey Arturo, por su riqueza natural venida de sus hermosos accidentes geográficos, vegetación abundante y dos cuerpos lacustres con fabulosas leyendas; me emocioné mucho y enseguida planificamos la salida. El repositorio fotográfico siguiente, muestra la majestuosa belleza y grandioso ecosistema al que me refiero. Sin más que esperar, empecemos a viajar a la antigüedad para conocer de historia, ecología y espiritualidad; este último aspecto, no porque vaya a intentar convertirte a alguna religión sino porque aquí subyacen las ruinas de una importante escuela monástica.

When my husband proposed me to visit Glendalough and told me that the place had been chosen by John Boorman to shoot some scenes of the film Excalibur alluding to the adventures of King Arthur, for its natural richness coming from its beautiful geographical features, abundant vegetation and two lake bodies with fabulous legends; I was very excited and we immediately planned the departure. The following photographic repository shows the majestic beauty and grandiose ecosystem to which I refer. Without further ado, let's start travelling back in time to learn about history, ecology and spirituality; this last aspect, not because I'm going to try to convert you to some religion but because here lie the ruins of an important monastic school.

La historia documentada por algunos autores de la época, final del siglo V de nuestra era, que luego de peregrinar por tierras donde se veneraban santos y estudiosos de las escrituras, el monje Kevin se internó en esta montaña; diestro en técnicas de meditación y conexión espiritual, su encanto espiritual y pasible se hizo popular entre los pobladores de Glendalougn.

The story documented by some authors of the time, end of the 5th century A.D., that after making a pilgrimage to lands where saints and scholars of the scriptures were venerated, the monk Kevin went into this mountain; skilled in meditation techniques and spiritual connection, his spiritual and passive charm became popular among the people of Glendalougn.

Conocido por tener cualidades espirituales y un admirable conocimiento sobre los elementos naturales y la vida en general, el rey O'Tool de Glendalough se animó a solicitar su consejo sobre cómo energizar y devolver juventud a un ganso que tenía de mascota, el cual presentaba deficiencia motriz y otros impedimentos fisiológicos por su longevidad.

Known for his spiritual qualities and admirable knowledge of the natural elements and life in general, King O'Tool of Glendalough was encouraged to seek his advice on how to energize and restore youth to a pet goose, which had motor deficiencies and other physiological impairments due to its longevity.

Lo cierto es que la solicitud del monarca se encontró con una demanda del joven monje, este le devolvería la habilidad al ave, siempre que el rey aceptara entregarle en compensación todas las tierras que volara el ave antes de pararse; se dice que el mandatario aceptó y tuvo que dar la titularidad de estas tierras a Kevin, quien con tocar el ave y frotar sus alas, levantó el vuelo como un juvenil pájaro.

The truth is that the monarch's request met with a demand from the young monk, who would return the bird's ability, as long as the king agreed to give him in compensation all the lands the bird flew over before it stopped; it is said that the ruler accepted and had to give the title to these lands to Kevin, who by touching the bird and rubbing its wings, took flight like a young bird.

Habiendo cumplido la promesa pública el rey O'Tool de Glendalough, Kevin se convirtió en dueño y procedió a fundar el primer asentamiento monástico de Irlanda; hoy en día son muchos los centros que se encuentran en funcionamiento; sin embargo, el monasterio que levantó Kevin, fue destruido en 1398 por el ejército inglés.

Having fulfilled the public promise made by King O'Tool of Glendalough, Kevin became the owner and proceeded to found the first monastic settlement in Ireland; today many centers are in operation; however, the monastery that Kevin built was destroyed in 1398 by the English army.

En pocos años Glendalough se haría famosa por su población espiritual, aspecto que se atribuye a Kevin. Se dice que podía pasar horas contemplando el lenguaje natural proveniente del chasquido de los arroyos, canto de las aves, roce de los árboles y sonido de la fría brisa montañosa.

In a few years Glendalough would become famous for its spiritual population, which is attributed to Kevin. It is said that he could spend hours contemplating the natural language of the clicking of the streams, the singing of the birds, the rubbing of the trees and the sound of the cold mountain breeze.

Y no es para menos, la abundante corriente de agua cristalina que se convierte en una bella estela blanca al chocar con el pedregoso canal del valle, es armonía para los oídos.

Not least, the abundant stream of crystalline water that turns into a beautiful white wake when it hits the stony valley channel, is harmony for the ears.

La riqueza hidrológica de Glendalough es sensacional, estas aguas descienden kilómetros de distancia para drenar sus aguas en lo largo y ancho del valle, llenando de vida este impresionante enclave esculpido durante la última glaciación.

The hydrological richness of Glendalough is sensational, these waters descend miles to drain its waters throughout the valley, filling with life this impressive enclave sculpted during the last glaciation.

El biotopo se combina con el característico verde que ofrece el bosque de galería y las numerosas comunidades de líquenes que dan un aspecto de escenario soñado que ha sido preparado para filmar una película de fantasía.

The biotope is combined with the characteristic green of the gallery forest and the numerous lichen communities that give a dreamlike scenery appearance that has been prepared for filming a fantasy movie

El dominio vegetal está representado por la población de robles.

The vegetal domain is represented by the population of oaks.

Se visualiza la saludable población de líquenes establecida como cobertura protectora alrededor de los arbustos, árboles y algunas rocas.

The healthy lichen population established as a protective cover around shrubs, trees and some rocks is visualized.

Estos ejemplares vegetales desnudos son especies caducifolios,se les conoce así porque deshojan durante una época y posteriormente recuperan su cobertura de hojas que los hace lucir frondosos.

These naked plant specimens are deciduous species, they are known as such because they shed their leaves during a period of time and later recover their leaf cover which makes them look leafy.

El famoso valle de los dos lagos, un paraíso lacustre abrazado por las montañas que esculpió la última glaciación.

The famous Valley of the Two Lakes, a lake paradise embraced by the mountains that sculpted the last glaciation.

Con sus gélidas y oscuras aguas con alto contenido de materia orgánica, estos lagos representan un centro de atracción natural y turística de gran importancia en Glendalough.

With their icy dark waters with high organic matter content, these lakes represent a major natural and tourist attraction in Glendalough.

En la parte llana del lago se puede ver plantas acuáticas que salen a la superficie, de cierta manera no es buen indicador porque las algas y plantas acuáticas en un lago de esta dimensión podrían sobre poblar el cuerpo natural de agua y paulatinamente agotar el oxigeno disuelto, esto desencadena una competencia en la fauna y flora acuática que termina con pérdida del equilibrio ecológico, se generaría un fenómeno de eutrofización que es fatal.

In the flat part of the lake you can see aquatic plants that come to the surface, in a way this is not a good indicator because algae and aquatic plants in a lake of this dimension could overpopulate the natural body of water and gradually exhaust the dissolved oxygen, this triggers a competition in the aquatic fauna and flora that ends with loss of ecological balance, it would generate a phenomenon of eutrophication that is fatal.
