Nuno Tristão was a Portuguese navigator of the 15th century, an explorer and slave trader on the West African coast. It was the first European known to have discovered the territory of present-day Guinea-Bissau, initiating a commercial and colonial relationship between the Portuguese and the peoples of that region that would last until 1974.

Destined to the Discoveries, of which Gomes Eanes de Azurara says he was "the first man who saw land of blacks", he was a man of great value who served that Prince in the Discoveries of the Coast of Guinea.

Nuno Tristão was killed on an unknown date, probably in the year 1446, during an assault aimed at capturing slaves, which took place on the African coast, about 320 km south of Cape Verde, in Rio do Ouro, which became Rio do Tristão.
