This phenomenon is known as the Troxler Fading Effect, which was first discovered in 1804 by Swiss doctor Ignaz Paul Vital Troxler. When a person stares at an unchanging visual stimulus for a long time, the picture in the peripheral field of vision gradually darkens or even disappears. If the pattern itself is blurry and the color contrast is low, the effect becomes more pronounced, so the images we see are always a blur and gray look. The cross mark in the middle of the picture is not necessary, but with it it helps people focus their attention.

This phenomenon can be explained by neuroadaptability. Deliberately gazing at the picture, the eyes continue to receive the same visual stimulus, and this invariable and less critical stimulation will be gradually ignored by the sensory system, and eventually people will no longer perceive it. And when the line of sight moves, the visual information is "refreshed", and the color pattern is perceived again. Similar adaptations occur in other senses.

Among the pictures of the Texler Fade effect, my favorite is the Cheshire cat below, which is a perfect fit! In fact, these two games are not so simple.

The images we see change with our cognition, and so does this objective image. Therefore, the information we perceive does not really reflect the outside world, because our cognition is disturbed by many factors (such as sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch, etc.) through our senses.
