Hello everyone! Today I would like to share a painting I did recently. It is a watercolour painting of a donut halo'ed with fruits and flower. Below is my reference picture. The donut that I selected to paint is the third from top right.
Here's a closer look of the donut that I painted :
Tools and materials
- An artblock sheet
- Buncho water colours
- A small round brush
- 2 containers of water (one to mix paint and one to clean brush)
- A palette to mix paint
- Staedler Luna colour pencils
- A piece of white chalk
- A HB pencil to draw
- A dust free eraser to correct mistakes in drawing
- A tissue to absorb excess paint/water
Method
This is my drawing of the donut. I used a HB pencil to do it. You can use 2B too but remember it is a soft pencil and can leave dark smudges when you paint over it later with watercolour. HB is a hard pencil and smudges less than a 2B pencil.
First of all, I painted the pink parts around the donut. I mixed two colours to create a gradient effect. Actually three colours because I also added some red at the edges to darken the shadows of the pinkish parts.
I painted the donut in golden brown. I darkened the edges with a reddish brown mixed with it.
I painted the base colours of the kiwi slice. I did not add much details at this stage as I wanted to wait for the first layer to dry before adding more.
Next, I painted the strawberry in red. As you can see, it is evident that my school grade art block sheet is of poor quality but I did not care much. I just wanted to paint.
I painted the leaves of the strawberry. I also painted the flower in two colours which are blue and purple. I thought the flower will look better that way. Purple makes it warm while the blue adds some cool values. I painted the center of the flower as well. Apart from that, I added some details to the kiwi slice.
I thought the pink areas were not vibrant enough so I topped them with more pink and peachy pink colours. I added more red at the edges as well. I added some highlights to the strawberry as it is like the main subject of this donut. I wanted it to look best. I used yellow and orange for that. I added some tiny details on the center of the flower too.
Here I have added more details to the kiwi fruit slice. I also used the lifting technique to lift some of the greens in thin lines using a clean wet brush and tissue.
This is how my painting looks in the bright sunlight. I held my painting near the window and captured a picture. It turned out looking great!
Here's a closer look of the donut and strawberry. I was not satisfied with the strawberry. So, I proceeded to add more details to it using coloured pencils. I used dark red colour pencil to add some shadow at the edges of the strawberry to make it look more 3 dimensional. I added a small amount of black and dark brown as well.
I also added some yellow to the strawberry leaf to give it some highlights. I was still not happy with the strawberry so I added some dots on it using a white chalk. Now it looks a lot better to my eyes.
Here's a closer view of the strawberry. I can almost grab it and eat it but then I will ruin my artwork :D
This is the completed painting. I had a lot of fun painting this artwork. Maybe because it is food and I rarely paint food. I like it so much that I might paint another donut soon.
I hope that you find my post helpful or at least cheerful. Thank you for dropping by and I hope that you have a great day ahead! Stay safe and healthy xx
