Hi Steemian, I want to share the story of rohingya who want to be independent in a refugee camp, on last Sunday I visited them there. Let's see the story.
Rohingya refugees have been living in a temporary camp for 10 months in the former Training Center, Muara Dua District, Lhokseumawe City.
There are now only 56 refugees, most of them have been transferred to Padang Bulan, Medan- North Sumatra on March 25, 2021 by the IOM.
But the activities in the camp are still as usual. Some local institutions and NGOs still run various programs of activities.
The education class was conducted by Geutanyoe Foundation, food and fruit distribution by JRS, water distribution by Human Initiative and other activities managed by PMI and ACT.
There are currently new activities in the camp, initiated by refugees. The volleyball and takraw courts turned into a place to dry fish.
Some Rohingya teenagers explained that they love sea fish because in their place of origin they always consume processed sea fish, such as salted fish.
Laibullah, a Rohingya teenager, claimed to buy a lot of fish at lhokseumawe market to be processed into salted fish.
The processed produce is partly consumed by itself, some are sent to the field for their relatives who have moved there.
"Here we easily get fresh fish from fishermen or fish shelters. Unlike in Medan, friends there are difficult to get fresh fish and the price is more expensive. They asked us to make and deliver salted fish there. Ramadan fasting is coming soon. We prepare this salted fish for iftar side dishes," said Laibullah.
He said their processed salted fish is different from the salted fish sold in aceh market.
Fresh fish that has been cleaned directly dried to dry. After that it is soaked with brine for four days.
According to them, such a technique of drying fish is very good so that the fish does not disintegrate and smells bad.
Types of fish that are processed are waist rope fish, anchovies, tembang fish, bilih fish, and several other types of fish.
The teenager, who fled Myanmar in 2017, said she wanted to be economically independent, one way to produce quality salted fish.
"We don't want to continue like this, we can only receive help from donors, we have to be independent," he said.
