What is BALUT?
Balut or balot is a 16-21 week old fertilized duck egg that contains egg yolk, egg white and a semi-developed duck embryo. It is considered as one of the most exotic Pinoy delicacies. It tends to attract more foreigners. It is commonly eaten by cracking it a little bit, put a pinch of salt and a little vinegar.
It is not only famous in Philippines but also in other countries like Vietnam or Cambodia.
Where do you usually see "balut"?
Here in Philippines, you can usually see "magbabalut" or "balut vendor" street-side. The picture above was taken when I go with my husband with his meeting with his fellow OFW. Since I craved for it, while waiting when the meeting end, I stopped by by ate's balutan. I chose a 16-weeks old "balut" because the embryo was still very small.
When do you usually see "balut"?
"Balut" vendors usually comes out at night, I don't know what really is the exact reason but I've heard that if you wanted to eat it you should eat it at the dark so you can't see the baby duck inside. You must not eat and pick the contents apart nor look at it so you can feel the tenderness and its palatability. It cost 15-25 pesos. And I tell you, if you tasted it, you will surely ask for another one.
"Balut" Benefits
"Balut" is a good source of protein and calcium. It is also considered as the best cure for hangover.
