The Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has announced funding of JPY 41 billion (about $306 million) for the first phase of the Cairo Metro Line 4. This funding, granted to Egypt by JICA, is intended to support the government's efforts to improve urban mobility and increase the availability of transportation options in Cairo, a megacity with a population of 20 million and heavy traffic.
Japanese companies are well-positioned on the project to extend the Cairo metro. The first phase of the fourth line of the Cairo Metro is 19 kilometers long and includes 16 stations, connecting the city center of Cairo to the Giza Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum. The timetable for the second phase of the metro line has not yet been announced, but it is known that it will be 23.5 kilometers long and include 19 stations.
The Cairo Metro has undergone several expansions since it was launched in September 1987 due to the growing population of the Egyptian capital and the resulting mobility challenges. The funding from JICA aims to address these challenges and improve the city's transportation infrastructure.
