Open marriage makes zero sense at all. Why not call it ‘open partnership’? That would be more fitting. Why attach the word ‘marriage’ when it bears no resemblance to what marriage truly represents? Perhaps they seek the respectability associated with marriage, yet this arrangement—an open marriage—is anything but respectable.

The purpose of marriage is to tie the knot between two people—that means you're stuck with each other till death. It’s a lifelong commitment. It’s a serious vow that most certainly prohibits fooling around with your neighbor or your neighbor's spouse.

I guess, immorality is today's morality. Funny how people always find ways to get away with things unscathed. When something is obviously immoral, they find a way to make it legal. It’s essentially legalized adultery. Adultery with consent? How unbelievably absurd is that? Well, you know what they say, things will get worse before it gets better.

Personally, I believe marriage is sacred and that it was established to keep us from committing adultery. Others may view it differently, but the difference is not that significant. While marriage is founded on love, open marriage seems devoid of it. Where one is anchored in loyalty, the other drifts away for the lack thereof.

For the sake of fairness, as people have diverse values and beliefs, this type of arrangement—especially for those who struggle with fidelity—might actually work for them. In the end, people don’t like being told what to do, especially about what is right. However, it remains true that people are given free will; they are entitled to make their own decisions and face the consequences their choices may bring. Some might argue that it’s merely a matter of personal preference. Seriously? You would choose to ruin your own life and the lives of others?

If open marriage is widely encouraged and people start to adopt its practice, we may not have a decent and thriving society in the future. Our sons and daughters will probably suffer the consequences. We’ll become a nation of adulterers and adulteresses. Unfortunately, we already know from the Book how such a story ends.

For partnership you might not need that official paper (exists in my country) for marriage there is one and you declare to give up on your freedom. Sense? If you need something it might.

Marriage is not founded on love. Women are sold to the highest bidder since ages and still are. Men marry the unproblematic one, not the love of their life or suddenly are gay.

Next to that new generations have huge wishlist of the perfect partner. Dating sites are very helpful to filter out the "wrong" matches. Pity it doesn't come with smell, attraction and fortune cookies.

Marriage is not founded on love.

My bad, I should have elaborated further. The 'marriage' I was referring to is the most common (traditional) Christian marriage—it's where we got the idea of marriage; the rest just followed along.

I believe what you're referring to is the 'unconventional' marriage where people marry for certain reasons other than love. And I agree, this type of arrangement is quite prevalent. I, for one, finds it hard seeing myself marrying for love, not with the prices of goods and services constantly skyrocketing.

Next to that new generations have huge wishlist of the perfect partner.

Best of luck to them. Perfect partner only exists in books and movies.

Come on Christian marriage, or any religion marriage, is rarely based on love. Family wants you to get married with the same religion and nothing else. Not to mention the high rate of incest and sexual abuse. Traditional is what we like it to be. Marriage was never sealed by church or the government.
I agree the perfect partner doesn't exist and there's no need to since we are far from perfect.
People always get married for a reason. Being with the love of your life is one, not being single/bullied is one, for the children one, to please parents, make families closer, to get a visa, you name it.
What is love? Only hardships can tell if people grew close, are loyal, show respect and still have fun together and can say I love you.

Okay. I hear you. Seemed like you don't believe in a romantic relationship anymore. Did something happen?

I knew a lot of religous people though that did marry for love and even amidst difficult situations.

Well said @henryclive.
I was going through the topic and reading these entries . Ah after long time I am back in game. What I understood is @xiao-aine doesn't believe in marriage or just don't want to get married. Whatever it is.
But I want to let @xiao-aine know that not in every religion and especially not in religion Islam it was for purpose. As I included not in every religion I meant to say origin of Christianity and Judaism etc. but slowly the marriages are becoming like you are saying, I admit nearly in all religions it is happening even in Islam.
But there are good ones too, to give as examples.
The question why to marriage is having two answers from now;
First is, because to not die alone, to have someone who give us Respect after the death, who remember us after our death. Who can tell life of ours to the rest of generation and the process will go on.

Secondly this is the purpose of life, the man and woman are made for each other, if we are going in the other way to use this, like going to bars, pub, clubs etc we know what's happening out there, for the time we are for sure, getting us out of tensions, questions, too much care, etc. but after we spend our these ten or twenty years, we will feel that we are alone, this all was the young blood's curse we faced. But the life will not changed then, and what spent was past. Maybe I made some points. Sorry my English is not well to understand but.....

I appreciate you for joining the conversation.

I respect Xiao-Aine's view that marriage is not based on love, as you mentioned that this reflects what has been happening both today and in ancient times. However, this should not invalidate the fact that people did marry for love; otherwise, we would not have known it.

I agree with you that man and woman were made for each other for that has been the design since the very beginning. We do have freewill, so those who don't like the design are free to do whatever they fancy. But of course, love doesn't come to those who refuse to love. That's the truth of it.
