Should unreliable dreams be discouraged?

What does it mean to have unreliable dreams? If a five-year-old tells me they want to become Spiderman, should I tell them it’s impossible and crush their innocent childhood dreams? I don’t think any of us would do that. In this case, as the child grows up, they’ll come to understand on their own that their dream isn’t realistic. But perhaps, because of that dream, they might steer their career toward becoming a comic book artist or develop a fascination with spider breeding.

I could sum it up by saying that any dream, even the most unrealistic one, gives meaning to our lives, enriches it, and makes us feel fulfilled. But it’s not always that simple. In my opinion, there are some dreams for which it can occasionally be too late. If someone wants to build a professional career in a field where starting at a very young age is crucial, they should understand that their chances are slim.

Of course, it all depends on perspective. For example, suppose I suddenly want to become a model at the age of 27. I should understand that at this age, the chances of conquering the modeling world and walking in fashion shows for the biggest designers are slim. But if it brings me joy, why shouldn’t I pursue it? Maybe I’ll make a mark on the local market, or perhaps I’ll become somewhat recognized in my country.

However, if I expect the grand world of fashion to still be wide open to me and begin treating it with utmost seriousness, the series of inevitable failures and disappointments could be mentally destructive, and this dream might lead to a decline in my well-being.

Dreams can take many forms, and we have the right to pursue them, even if they seem unrealistic. But what’s crucial in all of this is maintaining a sense of balance and adopting the right mindset when striving to fulfill them.
