When we read a post on Steemit, or an article on a website, it's easy to forget (or not notice) how much effort has gone into it. Whether that's online research, travelling to a destination, painting a picture or spending every moment of your free time writing a text-based game, all we see is something that may consume just 5 minutes of our time.
I feel like this is one of those posts.
The game's been a hard slog since my last update 5 days ago. Whilst I don't feel like I've achieved a great deal, I probably have. Amongst other things, I've rewritten some large chunks of code to allow them to be used in every apartment on every floor. I need to do something similar for the interactions in the corridors but I'm too scared to do this just yet.
The biggest stumbling block I've faced was my bright idea to introduce some "non-zombie" characters that you can interact with. I've not had to worry about this yet but now that @chriddi has stumbled across one such character (codename P0) and having chosen not to attempt to cave his head in with her Frying Pan, I now need to write some dialogue.
Whilst this has been difficult to get my head around, I also feel that it could be the most exciting part of the game. I've designed 3 such characters, each with their own personas and I can't wait to see what decisions people make when meeting them and implementing my ideas based upon the outcome of these conversations.
I'm still at a stage where I'm running the code manually, simply because there's still too much to write and I don't trust the game yet to look after itself. It keeps doing stupid things, which take far too long to rectify.
So this probably isn't the most exciting update that I'll ever write, but I hope you're as excited as I am to see what chriddi chooses next ๐คฃ
Once again, a big thanks to everybody who has an active game that is helping me to get through so many scenarios - my sense of purpose / duty to keep the game going for you is what's keeping me motivated. And also, thank you for your patience - I hope you're having fun ๐
What!? Chriddi has already found a P0 ;-)
I'll have to see who she's pretending to be...
I'm beginning to regret that I escaped from the third floor so quickly. Obviously the more interesting things happen there...
I think your current approach at the test phase is fine. I would probably have done something similar to be able to correct minor mistakes right away. Keep it up! I'm already having a lot of fun with it. :-) Not only with my game, but also with the others' :-)

Each floor's randomly generated so what one person sees on the 3rd floor will be different to what somebody else sees - so no 2 games will ever be the same.
If you'd like to know, I can tell you what you missed on the 3rd floor - I think that you've still got plenty of fun to come... even if there are a lot of annoying locked doors on the 2nd floor!

That's what makes it so appealing. :-))
No, no, maybe then I want to go back to the 3rd floor... ;-)

Hang in there but don't melt your head. What computing language are writing game in?

I think my brain melts on a daily basis! Itโs fun when things work - not so much when it doesnโt!
Itโs written predominantly with PHP with some JavaScript (SteemJS) to interact with the blockchain - which other than the interface is also acting as my โdatabaseโ.
Which language is your speciality?

I haven't done java or php in a long time but I can do them. So when you say text game you mean like Zork?
I use C/C++ Visual Studio 2022 enterprise. I am making DirectX 12 drawing programs now and I do have a PBR DirectX 12 THICC game engine. I just have to remove the Mario Kart graphics and replace those with other graphics.

Zork's a little before my time and perhaps what I'm doing's similar although more restricted in the entries that can be submitted. It's probably more like the old "Choose Your Own Adventure" books that would say "Go To Page..." depending upon what you want to do and then the "dice battles". The only difference being that my objects are randomly placed and the fights are automatically completed so no 2 games will ever be the same.
Ah, I remember seeing that in your profile... DirectX isn't something I've ever had any experience or knowledge about!
I did a little bit with C/C++ many, many years ago which I've completely forgotten.

Yes, well I wanted to start a Steemit gaming center with high end games but maybe more than that. My problem is I live in the desert, generate my own electricity which is minimal and have only phones to access internet: my bandwidth is terribly low by today's standards. Or, I would have Steem games hive.
One of the things I have noticed about online gaming is the amount of gigabytes of data required. I have 4 games I can't play because they require so much data. I think a fix would be to modularize downloads for gaming into smaller chunks than 55 or even 25 GB.
The Mario Karts example is 4GB with graphics. Comes with 4 racetracks.
Anyways I have RotoDraw3D DirectX 12 with not too much more to do to it and I am working on a Freehand draw as well. That has a ways to go but yesterday I made correctly draw lines of different lengths and the object faces and comes out as drawn. So I am getting there.

See the DirectXToolkitXaml12 and RotoDraw3D DirectX 12.
Thicc engine is dot Net and uses DXTK12

Anyways, doing the website front end and connecting it to Steem is very important! One man can't do it all.
There are a lot of artists here in Steem!

I don't know if this will motivate you, but I play a game with my daughter. If she's not around, I don't even come close to playing. We only play together and mostly she chooses our moves.
She is so interested that she does not want to go to bed, because maybe the next move will come. Yesterday we went to bed after midnight, making sure that there would be no more moves today :)
In between moves, we discuss the topic of zombies with her and discuss whether we made a particular move correctly.
So, if you are wondering if you are doing something useful to someone, then know that your text game can be more interesting even for the youngest generation than games on a mobile phone.

Ha ha - if you want her to go to bed, ping me a Discord message... if I don't reply, it means that I'm not at my computer which means that there won't be a move for a little while!
There probably isn't a right or wrong move yet... there's still too much to do and part of the testing is to see how hard it is to escape... I want it to be hard but not impossible ๐
It's really cool to hear that and it reminds me that I need to remove the swearing. Although... it's useful English to learn ๐คฃ

I didn't want to bother you once more, but if I really need to, I'll write to you :)
Oh, don't worry. We use a translator. Swearing is so soft in the Ukrainian language that it can be assumed that it does not exist at all.
