Self-knowledge and projection.

People have a tendency to know, investigate and inquire about the external. We are able to see the characteristics of any person, thing, element and object that is perceived by our senses, but very rarely and perhaps the majority of people fail to make an introspection, a deep investigation of what we really are. For human beings it is a real challenge to achieve self-knowledge.

Self-knowledge implies a look from the objectivity of what we are from the inside. Self-knowledge facilitates the path towards the discovery of our capacities, abilities and aptitudes which, once we have discovered them, we are able to strengthen and enhance. From this point of view, self-knowledge is presented as the route to full happiness and a successful life, because, knowing what I am capable of and how I can achieve what I want and dream with the skills I have makes it much easier to plan the goals of my life.

Self-knowledge involves the development of our attention and look at our inner world, it is about becoming aware of ourselves, to understand how our emotions work and act on our decisions and how we react to different situations of everyday life. Self-knowledge leads us to the valuation of experience, of our habits and how they influence our actions as well as the way we relate to our environment. But the development of self-knowledge does not happen overnight, it is a progressive path that is carried out through three fundamental pillars:

Identity and goals:

This is about discovering the different factors that have shaped our identity, in these factors we analyze those that we consider our cultural heritage, the influence of the family, our beliefs and all that has allowed us to form an identity. A defined identity leads us to set defined goals. Our goals are influenced by our identity because they are the product of our desires and wishes, that is why we must know in depth who we are as individual beings, from the strengthening of our own identity.

The development of attention

This is a process by which we take possession of our mind, it is to focus and center our attention on the things that are really important to us. Attention is part of the executive functions of memory, work, planning, problem solving and goal setting. When we develop attention we are able to concentrate on what is really necessary to our life, we are able to see the essence and to set aside appearances.

Awareness of emotions

This is a fundamental pillar of self-knowledge, our emotions determine our behavior, that is to say, they govern our reaction and action in front of the external world. Knowing and being aware of our emotions allows us to exercise control over our reactions and this translates into a healthier way of relating to ourselves and others.

As we can see, a self-knowledge of what we are from within allows us to project ourselves from where we are to where we want to go. Our goals and objectives are decided based on our abilities, capacities and potentialities and if we do not know them, it will be difficult to reach them.
